Economy + miles = a lot of competition in the selling arena.
Not a good time to sell anything, great time to buy a truck though.

Good luck, hope it works out for you

Yeah he told me he was booked, I asked to be placed on a waiting list and ask for his pricing. Did not receive a response yet.

Is he the only vendor that does installations.
I probably can install them myself but I have atrthritisin my thumbs that makes it pretty painful to grab and pull on material and tools.

Remember we have an Autocross event This Weekend!! (Sunday the 6th)
Anyone wanting to Run be there at 7:00am If you would like to run another time and have never run this would be a good time to come and watch. This is also a good time to see how our end is run and help out with future Autocross's.

Same lot as the Boeing car show, Stewart Ave exit from I-95.
We could head there after Ridley Creek to watch?

Old tires are just too risky unless your going to trailer it.

My 84 would climb up to 240 in heavy traffic, the fan was on, I turned the AC off did not help much. Place it in netral while sitting that helped a little.

that was with a 160 degree Thermostat.
Clean everything out over the winter, replace the water pump, added a 180 degree Thermostat, added a fan switch to come on at 190 instead of 220.
Don't think all that is going to make a big difference, think I should add a double wide radiator

What kind of gain do you get from gutting or removing? There does not seem to be hardly any resistance, mine spun pretty free when I had it off the car.

Yeah man! No runs, no drips, no errors! It's ready to go, I took it to work Monday and all is well.

It had 160 degree Thermostat that seemed to be open all the time (almost no heat if the air temp was below 40 and would heat up very fsat in traffic to 220) so I replaced it with a 180, and I'm now waiting for a 190 degree fan switch to come so I can replace the 220 degree switch currently in the block.

Where we going? :-)

You answered my question, and thank you. I was sincerely interested in what you heard. You heard something abnormal and you went looking. The way it was first worded it sounded a lot more casual than what you actually went through. My comment on the "It's getting old, so I'd better replace it" mentality was aimed at the suggestion of the off hand replacement of the ECT sensor for no reason other than its age. YOU heard something, tracked it down and took action. That is the way it ought to be.

RACE ON!!!

Thanks for your comments, and I'm not replacing the ECT, but this does provide more insight into the car which is always good, and what the heck the weather sucks right now, I have nothing better to do than strain my back leaning over, fighting boaderline impossible design engineering just to replace a water pump. If anyone is considering just replacing the water pump only because it's old, think again it not a walk in the park. :-)

It would be better to change them first, because they are gas charged, and will try to effect the ride height.

BUT.. it's all sort of pointless if you're running on original bushings. Those things will fuse together and bind up, or just fall apart. Even if new gas shocks raised your ride height, the bushings might let it rise unevenly. Or they might loosen up 3 weeks after the shock install. They might crack loose while the car is on jackstands and find a new binding position...

And if you're gonna pull the bushings out, then you've got easy access to those old ball joints and tie rod ends. Anytime you change those you need an alignment...

And you see how suddenly you've got the entire car torn apart because you just had a leaky shock.

Anyways, put your new shocks on, hit some speed bumps, head to the alignment shop, and call it a day.

I don't think gas charged shocks will change the ride height or alignment, but the bushings, ball joints, rod ends, and wheel bearings will effect how good an alignment you will get. I hope you have a trust worthy mechanic

Hey I got some of the stuff off today, enough to feel the significant play in the shaft of the water pump (side to side). Unlike the new one that does not do that.

Still it's living up to all my expectations and being a vette, meaning you have to remove way more than normal to get to what you want to replace.

Taking my time, removing and cleaning everything.

Tom

What DOES a water pump that is about to start leaking, sound like?

After 24 years and 165,000 miles I am still using the factory ECT sensor. I have a hard time getting into this "It's getting old, so I'd better replace it" mentality. PM is one thing, but the wholesale replacement of anything that MIGHT fail, is a bit extreme.

RACE ON!!!

Good question! Well I'm VERY attentive to my motor when it's running at idle. Something sounded different, it was rotational, consistant, and I had not heard it before. Breaking out my trusty sethescope (Long Screwdriver) I went about listening to the Air pump...no it sounded OK, power steering pump, nope it sounded ok, water pump....YEAH BABY.... it matched the sound perfectly. A little bit a "chink" sound that could be the bearing starting to go. I know I know, it's suppose to start leaking at the weep holes first, but why wait I know it's sounding different, it does not sound like it's smoothly working. Better to fix in the garage than get towed later, or distroy what could be a fun day in my future.
It's an 84, it sat quite a bit for 12 years, I've been treating it like a vette so it could be starting to go. Plus I get to clean up some areas I could not get to before :thumbright:
I'm extremely happy for your good fortune with parts on your car, however that does not mean that every car has been built so stout. I would guess that knowing as much as you do about vettes, and hearing the same noise that I'm hearing you would probably agree that replacing the water pump would be the right thing to do. My mentality is ...if you honestly believe that something is not right, check it out, and if your convinced that you need to be proactive and replace something before it breaks knowing it's on it's way out I think that is being pretty smart. Heck a water pump is cheaper than a tow job.

Thank you for your input though.

Tom

Just a thought on the coolant temp sensor. While you're in that deep, might want to consider a new one just for preventive maint. if it hasn't been changed lately. I assume a 84 has one in the same location as 89?

Hey folks I'm getting ready to change the water pump in my 84. It's not leaking yet but it's sounding like it will soon. Just posting to see if I should be aware of any surprises. I've changed dozens of water pumps, but never in a vette. Also plan on flushing out the system, changing the thremostat, upper and lower hoses, and clean out any debri around the radiator and AC condenser.

Thoughts, Ideas, Suggestions??

Thanks
Tom

My son and I raced trucks (Lunch Box heavily modified) and RC-10's in a Gym on a tile floor. Talk about slippery, and soft suspension was the only way to go along with camber adjustments.
Fun stuff though!

OK for the inside two bulbs, but the outside I've done two ways. Reaching up past the muffler, and reaching through the wheel well.

Neither is fun, tough to get the bulb in, a few scrapes, one beer, and 25 minutes. Could be worse, after all it is a vette.

Then if they found sills out of an 84 - 86 it would fully cover and have a pad for sliding in and out. Keep looking at ebay, it will come up sooner of later
