OK, here's the deal. Not VATS, not starter enable relay, none of the above. Column lock cylinder was shot and needed to be replaced. It'll be back on the road soon.

Thanks for the ideas and help.

First off, I forgot to mention it is an auto. Good advice on the key. I did clean it and sprayed the lock as well. I don't have a back up but will have the original read and another one made on Monday and give it a try.

Thanks for pointing out some of the obvious things I overlooked.

Once again I seem to be cursed by an aging vehicle! Guess it's because most of them ARE old. I again require the assistance of the C4 brain trust that in contained within this site. On to the problem.......

As some may recall, I had an intermittent start problem with the 91. Turned out to be the starter and had it rebuilt. All was well and good until Friday. Left work to run some errands before the gym. Stopped a Lowe's for ceiling paint, got in and went to Celluar Plus for a headset for my Blackberry. When I returned it would not start. No crank, no noise, no click - nothing. While turning the key, I noticed that the Security light remained on. Repeated tries gave the same response. I know, you are saying "VATS - just wait for the required time and retry". Therein lies the problem. Two years ago I had Alvin (PCMforless)do some custom chip work for me and as part of the work the VATS was programed out and have never had an issue! At any rate, I waited 15 to 20 min. talking to the guys in the store and trying out some new phones. Got back in and same result. With tools in hand I went back yesterday. Disconnected the battery, removed the piggyback chip from the memcal, reconnected the battery and nothing - same as before. I went to each door and operated the lock manually, checked the and reset plungers even opened and shut the hatch just to be sure. Nothing. I tried to set of the alarm (horns) by locking the doors and reaching in to open them - no alarm. All accessories work (lights, radio, etc.) and the Security light stays lit. The only code was H46 (history VATS code).
Sorry to be so long winded, just wanted to give the details.

Ideas?

Sorry it took so long to post back. The starting issue I had (notice the past tense)has been fixed. Was finally able to get the vette on jackstands and the starter out on Wed. Rather than buy a new (~$300) or reman.(~$150) I decided to have mine rebuilt. Dropped it at the shop Thursday afternoon. Got a call from the shop Friday to let me know that the starter was in good shape but the contacts were shot and were replaced. Got it back that day and put it in tonight. Starts each and every time now. Total cost to me - $45.00 with a 24 hour turn around time! So far, I am a happy boy.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Bill

Well, I have finished the brakes on the truck and can put the vette back in the garage. As I said, I'll check on all areas of responses although it has started, without fail since the recent issue.

Thanks again.

My 91 seems to have a mind of it's own. If I go down to just fire it and let it run for a few min. during the week, it will start and run fine. If I need to move it for whatever reason, it just clicks. Happened again this morning - needed the space to pull the Ranger in and bleed the brakes. Jumped in and hit the key and got a single click and nothing. Repeated attempts got the same result. Got a little pissed and came up for a cup of coffee. Returned to smack the starter with a hammer to see if that changed anything, hit the key just for fun and BAM - she fired fine like nothing was wrong!!

Any ideas?

Not really a State beer, but there is a small brewery in central NC - Red Oak. A deep red beer. Seriously excellent stuff but as stated, very filling.

OK...
1# Since you are stock, AC Delco parts should be fine. I like Delco Rapid Fire #5 plugs for my 91.

#2 You could do either, but if you temps are running high, I'd clean the area between the radiator and condensor.

#3 Start by checking the timing.

#4 Sorry, I don't know. I have a coupe.

I came in when I was done, and it was about 10:30. I thought, "WTF, I must be getting really old and slow!" After I took a shower I finally figured out she had set all the clocks ahead already.

Use care when drilling to avoid nicking the ring gear, a depth "stop" on your drill bit at 1 inch will prevent damage. I have used tape wrapped thick enough to make a shoulder or spot weld a washer on the drill bit.

I've used a piece of rubber tubing (fuel line) cut to leave a measured lenght of the bit exposed. Works like a charm.
