We rented this car from Dollar during our Holiday trip to FL.

Over the 5 days, we put about 300 miles on it.

This is NOT a review about long term reliability or durablity, just driving impressions.

The Sonata is Hyundai's answer to the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord. Compared to either, it's not bad. Considering how crappy Hyundai's were, this thing was a HUGE step forward.

The car seemed to be genuinely well screwed together. No rattles and it rode nice. Handling wasn't bad. No worse than either the Camry or the Accord, more leaning towards Accord.

The interior has quite a bit of space for back seat passengers and the trunk is more than ample.

The drive feels good, too. The car isn't like many of the modern cars that make you feel like your driving in a mini-van! It had a nice feel in that respect.

The 4 banger was not sluggish... don't get me wrong, it wasn't going to win many races, but you weren't going to get run over, either. The V6 would be better, but the MPG on the 4 is IMPRESSIVE. We used 3/4 of a tank for the above 330 miles.

The stereo is so-so... not bad, but not great. The seats are comfy and climate controls worked well. The IP is actually striking to look at. The gauges have that jewelry feel about them; the look of a fine watch.

All in all, not a bad effort.

Everything I've read implies a vast improvement of quality in the Hyundai line-up. A decent ride at an affordable price. I'll never buy one though. There's not enough room to store my ego.

I never said I would buy one... and I sure as hell won't trade the Vette in for it.

BUT... for someone looking for a fairly nice sedan, they could do worse... Also, with the good long term warrantee, 10 years/100k miles, gives it potential for the long haul.

And yes, Tommy, the build quality has improved significantly.

I've rented one also. I was really impressed with the perceived quality, but it's not my type of car. I think it was the V6. No power, but people buying one wouldn't know what to do with horsepower anyways.
