Anybody ever go aftermarket on a clutch and flywheel for the 4+3? The two clutches I put in my car over the last 25 years, I bought from the General. Looking for something maybe a bit better for the 383. Anybody with SPEC experience?
Thanks. |

SPEC had a bad rep a few years back... poor customer service and poor quality control. I don't know about them today. I had one then, and really, wasn't impressed.
Check with Mcloed or Centerforce. Also, RAM makes good clutches. |

Thanks for the input, Andy. I was hoping someone had actually done this. From what I'm reading, it seems the stock cast flywheel is 16lbs. I didn't weigh mine but it sure feels like more than that. I guess I'll have to weigh it to be sure. With a car as heavy as the Corvette, I don't want to go much lighter than stock. It looks like in any case I'll have to pick and choose the parts as the folks you mention don't seem to offer a kit from flywheel to throw out bearing. $760 for the Centerforce set up shipped from Summit. I guess if you want to dance to the music, you gotta pay the band! |

The old cast flywheel weighs only a bit more than a stone? Damn, I wish my DMFW was that light... try 40lbs!
I agree, I wouldn't lighten it one bit. That's a good weight. Also check ZOOM clutches. |

Don't talk to me about freakin stones! After more than 20 years in the UK, I still can't come to grips with this stone/pound thing for weights. But pound is also money, unless it's a quid! Wait, tea is a drink, but it's also the evening meal! I thought once I got hood/bonnet, muffler/silencer, shock absorber/damper figured out I'd be OK, then I find aluminum is aluminium! I should just hang myself. See, you shouldn't have gotten me started. Thanks again, Andy. I'll check out ZOOM. Used them many years ago on my '68 Corvette and was happy. Looks like I'll probably go with the Centerforce right now though. |

The oem flywheel is pretty light because the casting isn't overdone. The aftermarket replacements however weigh probably twice as much. I like a heavy flywheel for street driving though.
