My engine came home without plugs and I was wondering what plugs you guys are using in your LT1 383 stroker motors? I have a brand new set of Autolite Platinum plugs (AP106) on the shelf from the previous build that I never used for some reason.

Josh, Autolite 103 is heat range 3. So Autolite must go colder the smaller the numbers. Some mfgs go the other way with higher numbers being colder.
I suspect yours are doing well? I guess my 106s are too hot. Probably why I didn't use them before. I hate getting old and forgetting why I did or didn't do something two years ago! |

Yeah, I just took some NGKs out of there. I had no problem with them. Autolite's are quality plugs for the money too! I have read a lot of threads on this subject and I'm not too concerned with mfg as I am proper heat range. A copper core plug from one mfg is likely as good as the next. All the little extras like platinum, dble platinum, iridium, forked tongues and all are just icing on the cake for longevity or marketing from what I have gleaned. |

I run NGKs. If you call their tech line with your motor and estimated hp they will recommend a heat range to you. I know in one of my old posts I have the part number I use, it's two ranges colder than stock.

I do believe that dbl platinum and iridium do work. Some other tricks they keep adding to plugs are just a joke. I have issue with a spark plug creating this super post apocalyptic flame front adding 20hp. Just ain't buying it. Spark. Fire. That's the trick. |

Shouldn't it be (somewhat) based on your compression? It's my understanding that colder plugs should be used with higher compression. I'm using a colder-than-stock plug because I'm higher compression now.

Yes... you are correct. I was running 104s before, but I actually had a little higher compression then. This 383 has 10.7, a little less than before. I'm going to go with 104s for now and see how they do. |
