I need an idea for a tamper resistant bolt, that can also be locked to prevent from loosening. The situation is a wheel "keeps falling off". We have used a locking tab, but the client removes it. Any ideas would be great. The bolt is on the end of an electric motor and holds the hub on. There is a key in it so there is no twisting force on the bolt. Only a lateral load.

Why does the client remove the tab? Is this a liability issue? Warranty? Does the hub hace to come off frequently? |

The hub only has to come off when the tires are replaced. Once a year maybe. We have torqued the bolts, then added loctite, then used loctite and locking tabs. They claim it is always the left wheel (which would actually tighten as you drive). Plus the motors and wheels were replaced a month ago. Then they claim the same issue. |

One that came to mind right away.

Its a 5/16 bolt that is in it. We were thinking of option #1, but need a way to lock it (for security). The current bolt is removed on the left, and the right has several markings of the tabs being bent in and out. The locking tabs were new with only one bent when sent out. These wheels are a 5" with a 2" dish.

Other than drilling the bolt and lock tab then using a lead/wire seal (to prove the tab hasn't been tampered with), there's not much out there that is both tamper resistant and can be locked.

I like the security hex. Once torqued, fill the hex with JB weld.
You'll have to chisel it off later but the client will have to destroy it to get it off. |
