I just dropped the new motor into the Vette...

The original engine in the car? Isn't the original engine!!! It was, apparently, replaced under warranty at some point.

there are supposed to be 2 sets of numbers on the engine number pad... mine does not have a 2nd set of numbers... this means the engine was a crate engine for warranty replacement. I am suspecting that since 1992 was the first year for the LT1, there may have been a few extra issues at hand... I have no idea when this happened, or the effect on mileage. I am going to have a friend run the VIN through the GM computers and see what he can learn.

That's interesting. I didn't know that OEM motors could be tracked on the later model vehicles. Learn something every day.

unless something changed, I am pretty sure you can still track numbers that way at least thru the C4.

I know on the older ones when it was a replacement block, it was just a standard gm part number that represented a replacement engine. And often spanned multiple years. Wonder what info you can find?

If nothing else, confirm that the VIN was still transferred thru 1992.

I know, for a fact, that this was true on L98s, and assumed it to be true all the way thru the end of the LT1 (meaning, 1997 f-bodies). I have never heard reference to "numbers matching" on the LSx cars... also, there isn't a number on the trans case that matches the car, nor on the diff.

Yea. C2's & 3's had partial VIN's and a number with the horsepower designation on them.
The block part number is cast in.

Info on a 92 is probably in the NCRS Judging Manual.

Can you take a pic? And give me the numbers?

I can ask on the Technical Discussion Board, they MAY have an answer.

I have judged C4s with engine swaps that the owner did not know about ...

Does the judging book make any reference to the number pad?

It's in the Helm Manual, IIRC, I will check that, too.

It does on C2's & C3's , don't know about C4's, I've never seen the manual.

I may be able to download the judging sheets but they aren't as specific as the manual.

Probably fairly accurate, but no guarantees ...

1992 LT1 casting number: 10125327

Casting date should be a four digit alphanumeric code

The VIN derivative stamping on the left rear of the block should be 1H51XXXXX.X where the 1 represents Chevrolet, H identifies the model year, 5 represents Bowling Green, and the first five Xs represent the last five digits of the VIN.

Hope this helps!
