I'll start off with an apology, my bad, I don't visit this site very often, only if I need help, which I do!

Lent the vert to my son (really bad idea) now I can get off the lift in reverse and put it in drive. Starts to move in first but won't shift out of first!!!!!!!!!!!!! Where do I start?

Thanks for any guidance given!

Governor is likely your problen.
Either an apple cored gear, or a stuck valve.
Do not replace it with an aftermarket.
Disassemble, inspect, clean with carb cleaner, and put a new gear on it.

I want to thank you for the transmission rebuild details, I have already read through it, but don't relish the thought of having to do it, good winter project which is just around the corner here!! LOL

John

Happy to help John.
Rebuilding a trans is not easy, or a job the average back yard mechanic can easily do.
But, if I could do it, anyone can.
Good luck with the inspection, repair, and (hopefully not needed) overhaul.
Extensive travel keeps me off the forums, but vrodpete@msn.com is my email. Sometimes, that is the quicker way to get me.

Luckily you can pull the governor with simple hand tool and without removing the trans!

Pete, Sami had some suggestions and this morning I turned the key on but did not start the car. I ran it through the gears using the button on top of the shifter and then depressed the brake pedal and running it through the gears again using the button.

I decided to try it on the road and it shifted the way it always did? Does the shift button do any kind of reset?

I've had the car for 11 or 12 years now and drive it pretty hard when I do take it out but never had this issue!

That doesn't "reset" anything. You might have freed something up that was sticking. When is the last time you changed the fluid?

From another forum...possible causes or not shifting from first:

Governor valve sticking. Governor driven gear loose or damaged. Governor driven gear retaining pin missing. Nicks or burrs on output shaft, governor sleeve or case bore. Governor support pin in case too long or short. Governor weights or springs missing, binding or damaged. 1-2 shift valve sticking. Valve body spacer plate or gaskets damaged or incorrectly installed. Case to valve body ace not flat or damaged. Governor screen restricted or damaged. Restricted or blocked 2-4 servo assembly apply passages. Nicks or burrs on 2-4 servo assembly pin or pin bore in case. Missing or damaged 2-4 servo assembly piston or pin seals. Fourth servo piston installed backwards. 2-4 band assembly worn or damaged. 2-4 band assembly anchor pin not engaged.

I would still check the governor as suggested.

The governor is a popular sticking point with those transmissions. Easy enough to fix... but just annoying that it happens!

I would get the system flushed and install all new synthetic fluid.
