(1985, A4, very stock, 71k miles) When I drive Lauren I sometimes (of course) hear a clunck. It'll get louder, than softer, go away, come back, etc. More data: 1) If you forced me to pick where it's coming from, I'd pick passenger's side front, but I'm not absolutely sure of that. 2) I hear it with the HVAC on or off. 3) I hear it more when I'm cruising or slowing down. 4) There's nothing obviously loose in the engine compartment. Thoughts? |

Motor mounts would result in seeing the engine REALLY move side to side.
I am thinking... In no order... * Shock mount * Spring mount bushing * upper or lower control arm bushing * Ball joints * tie rod ends (inner or outer) * brake pads Take your pick, John... |

I had a similar "clunk/thud" on my Firebird,1986, and it was the sway bar end link bushings.

I am not a fan of damning the motor mounts... GM motormounts last forever if the engine isn't beat on.

Get it jacked up and start rattling parts in the front end. Could be anything in the suspension. Could also be a driveshaft u-joint. Sometimes sounds are hard to pinpoint.

Many of the automakers today have sound analyzers... they can detect, via the frequency of the sound, what is causing it.
Engine RPM vs driveline RPM vs wheel RPM vs vehicle speed... etc... |

I had a similar issue, but it wasn't the front. There are teflon coated washers between the half shafts and spindle in the rear. If they have been worn out, broken, or never there there is a prominent clunk. Sitting in the car I could have sworn it was under me, but someone outside the car said it was actually from the rear.
It is easy to change and you can get it from the dealer. I don't remember the part number, but it was only $5 each and took me less than an hour to change both. My car didn't have one of them. |
