Qack | Battery draining | ||

Hmmm.
My battery drains after the car sits for a couple of days to the point that the car won't start -- it's a '94 Vertte. I have the FSM, have followed it's guidance and am now stumped. I know the following: 1. Generator checks out and is charging the battery 1a. While driving, the voltage -- as observed on the instrument - is between 14.2 and 14.4 volts 2. The battery was tested on a load-testing machine and is fine 3. I removed the battery from the car and let it sit for a couple of days -- it did not lose its charge. 3. Current drain when the car is shut off -- very low 4. There are no aftermarket items installed Any suggestions? Thanks |

How did you determine the low current drain and what is the reading?
When the battery goes down, you say it won't start. Does it turn over? |

The problem I had on my '91 was that the wiring to the power seat was wrapped too closely around the front inboard mounting stud. When the seat was bolted down, the wiring (which is always "hot") eventually chaffed through and grounded out.

I had a simular problem and it turned out to be a headlight motor. I leave the car parked for several days or weeks between use. When I would try to start it I would find the battery to low to start it. One day after my short driving session I heard it pulse to the closed position a couple of times after I parked the car. I unhooked the motor and found the battery stayed up. Changed motor no problem since.
I have also seen posts that say it is impossable to happen that way. Another thing is it would eat motor gears, Probably because it dit not want to shut off. Tried cleaning the switches but it did not help. |
