I'm getting a code 33 from my '86. Looking thru the FSM diagnostic flow chart, it seems it could be 1 of 3 things. A bad relay for the Mass Air Sensor, a bad ECM, or a short in 1 or more of about a gazillion places. Since I did have the ECM out for some of the work I'm in the process of, I'll check there, and do a bit of cleaning and inspecting of the contacts. I did NOT have it open, just disconnected. I think my next look will be the MAF relay, and since they're kinda cheap, replace it.

Where is it located? Anyone know?

After that, I guess it's into the hunt for a short. Do any of you have a better plan of attack? I'm very open to suggestions....

Thanks in advance

I would try to swap the relay first. See if the code goes away or changes to the other maf codes. Also inspect everything and try cleaning the maf.

Looking further it appears the 86 has different relays for each as opposed to the newer models. These should be the part numbers:

GM 10067925 MAF power
GM 10094701 MAF burn off
GM 14078914 Fuel pump

Thanks for the info Matt. I stopped by a local dealer and they gave me the Burn-Off relay # as 10094701. It's a disccontinued #. But I think I can still locate it from other sources.

The MAF relay # he gave (not too sure about this one) 10067925.

The ECM# he gave was #88999194. Not too sure about that one either.
I did not have my v.i.n. w/ me, but I will tomorrow.
Now, I'm gonna read some of the stuff you listed above.
Thanks again.

EDIT

I just went out and checked the part numbers, and low and behold, the GM numbers are still on the two relays AND they're labeled. So, I now have the part #'s for the relays I need to look for, so after I try a cleaning of the contacts, maybe I'll hafta go on a hunt for these. But as I stated above, I need to double check the ECM connection before I proceed.

the numbers have changed on relays over the years
auto zone carries them just take old one with you if it looks the same that will be the one. best thing to do is replace the maf relay and burnoff relay at the same time. I have 3 or 4 sitting around the garage they are cheep. if you replace the old one and still have code you can always take it back and get your money back.
ecm changed numbers also have one on ebay for $30 or 40 dollars I was running it in my 87 with an 89 prom they are tough.

Y'know, it just kinda hit me. My O/D light was on (4+3 in an 86) when I fired it up from cold. If memory serves, isn't it s'posed to come on AFTER the engine reaches a certain operating temp?

The reason I bring this up is because I thought I saw something regarding a fault in the O/D switch or relay or something causing a code 33. I can't seem to locate it again. Have you guys run across this?
