I can read and understand a FSM fairly well, but here is one paragraph that I just can't follow.
1989 model
Page 6E3-B-3, top right of page.
"If engine starts but then immediately stalls open distributor, set timing connector."

I fully understand what the timing connector is and where it is, and it is not inside or around the distributor. And the open distributor part?

I'm hunting a cause of mine starting up fine and then sometimes it will die immediately.

I've read and re-read that paragraph a dozen times and it still does not make any sense to me.

Any thoughts

Joel

Do you got spark?

I would first make a resistance check of the fuel injectors and a fuel pressure test.

Yea, fuel pressure is correct. 42lbs instantly with key on. All injectors ohm at 17.2- Bosh III type.

I was just curious about that sentence from the FSM. Just dosen't make any sense to me.

Thanks
Joel

The 90 FSM has the exact same sentence. Makes indeed no sense.

What it leads to, the pick up coil, I experienced, when it's the cause, you won't get any rpms on your digi dash.

I measured a few of these coils, all came up with about 700-800 ohms.

This is so intermittent it will catch me by surprise. Might happen twice in a day, might not happen again for a month. I've been able to "monitor" fuel pressure once when this did happen. I just got lucky and already had the fuel pressure gauge attached, pressure stayed high 40's during crank,die,re-crank & run with no change. Not sure about injector pulse during this, have not been able to check yet. Have not been able to notice tach yet, but am trying to watch this every time I start car up.

I shoulda hit "Quote" after reading Andy's post.

I'd agree with that possibility. While often wrong, I'd think these manuals are written by car guys, and edited at that time, by bleary-eyed tech types, then sent for final editing (by NOT car guys) then put to bed for publishing. If no reason arises to re-examine the procedure, the written word ages into blunder in future printings.

I'm looking in my '89 FSM.
"If engine starts but then immediately stalls open distributor, set timing connector. If engine then starts and runs OK, replace pickup coil."
Because of my build, I don't have an OEM dizzy any more, so bear with me.
That final sentence (I would guess) is a good clue. Disconnect the timing connector normally disconnected when you set your timing. If it runs ok, then there's the issue. When you disconnect that wire, your cars ECM goes into the "Limp home" mode and sets a code resulting in the "check engine " light, but will run and drive. So I'd say unhook the tan timing connector and give it a try.
I hope this helps. I'm not sure how its related to the pickup coil, but this has been my "best guess."

I've been too busy with other things to really get more involved with the car. But, it will crank and run with timing connector disconnected. It does the same thing with that ECM I got from you, so that shouldn't be the problem. Had to crank\start about 30 times, but it did finally do the crank-start-die-crank-start once.
I'm going to replace the pick-up coil when I get some spare time, should be this week or next.

I know what you mean about time. My vette has been sitting untouched for so long it’ll take a day to get reacquainted with where I am on it.

I installed the new ACDelco pick-up coil #D1945X yesterday. Everything went well as I've changed many of these over the years. Car started up perfectly. Still have to set the timing and a couple of small things to button up. Old coil was really rough looking, even the magnet was broken in four parts. I hope that was the problem, but I'll have to drive it around for a few weeks. Will update later with any more news.

Thanks Bob. I've driven the car around some last two days on short "errands", no problems yet.

Past due for a update on this. Well, after replacing the pick-up coil and driving around longer it started the same problem of intermittent stalling. Car was parked for the last several months while I continued looking for the problem. Fuel pressure started getting low at idle,32-34 lbs. Voltage to the three wire connector at rear connector was correct. Pulled the pump assembly last week and I think I finally found the problem. Hot wire and connector at the pump was corroded badly. Insulation was even melted on the wire about 1/2 inch. I don't see how the car was even running with the condition of that connector. Pump connector was burnt some also. Installed a new kit from Racetronix, so far so good. That was a new ACDelco pump I installed back in 2011 and did not notice any problems with the wire or connector then.

That sounds like a pretty good catch Joel.
My thoughts were headed toward vacuum leak leading to the fuel pressure regulator, or the regulator itself. But then, I haven’t been diligent about reading everything you’ve tried. I’m now wondering what would’ve caused that kinda corrosion on the terminal. Obviously it’s something you don’t want to occur again.
Anyway, I hope this brings this issue to it’s end.

Well, I hope I don't regret this so here goes. I've been driving the car around town quite a bit in the last month. Still had a small "dead spot" sometimes around 40 mph, so I replaced the original TPS. Everything has been perfect since that. I really think there were several things going on that got a little aggravating. (1) the broke magnet in the pick-up coil possibly, (2) poor connector fuel pump harness/motor (3) tps dropping out. This was not a well defined thread but possibly might help someone later. Main thing is "don't give up"!

Hope that solves it! The TPS can go bad. My old maf also had a dead spot in the rpm range. A point to ponder.
