CorvetteBob Fuel line size question

Once again my overthinking mind has led me to another horrible period of Obsession.
My corvette is an ‘89 . As most of us know, it has 3/8” fuel lines. However at several points in the line, especially at the filter, the line has been formed to hold an O ring. This form results in the inside diameter shrinking from 5/16 to less than 1/4”. This is, by percentage, a substantial reduction.
My question, how much engine can this feed? Certainly it’ll work well for a stock, or near stock power output, but My 383 will be putting out nearly 200 more horsepower.
Will, the stock lines with these restrictions feed enough?
Using -6 AN fittings is a good option, but the adapters to my lines once again restrict down to less than 1/4”.
Any ideas?

I know. That’s always been an obvious choice. For some reason I’ve been staying away from it. I guess I’ll look into it a bit.
Thanks for taking the time.

You're overthinking it. My 383 is just fine with stock fuel lines.

The guys that get into heavy boost upgrade or add an additional fuel pump but not necessary for your application.

Thanks Mat.
Yes, overthinking things is an issue I’ve developed over the years.
In the process of this, I’ve also discovered light corrosion in the lines forward of the filter and I’m looking through the net to find solutions. I really don’t want to change all the lines so I’m hoping there’s a solution out there I can find. So far I’ve seen evaporust and the rustoleum version of it.
I’ll probably give one of them a try.

Addressing the rust in the lines, I’ve gotten some of the Rustoleum product to run thru the lines. The instructions say the surface to be cleaned need to be clean and the car hasn’t been driven in 15 years so I think there’s probably some gas varnish laying in the lines. Ok, so here’s my thinking, if I set up the lines with fuel hose to connect them at one end and get an elcheapo electric fuel pump and set it all up in a recirculating system. Of course there would be a filter at the end of each line with that system running thru a reservoir bucket to allow air to leave the system.
My first application would be to remove any varnish/crap and the second the de-rust process, and thirdly water to rinse.
Maybe a follow up of gas with stabilizer to purge the water and anything left in the kinks would be stabilized fuel.
Probably use denatured alcohol for the cleaner .
I’m certainly willing to entertain suggestions.
I really DON’T want to fight with replacing the lines.
Suggestion?

Another question for you Mat, are you using a stock fuel pump? After 15 years, if mine is still working, maybe I’ll use the tank as my reservoir and the pump in it, then put in a new pump when I’m done.
Any suggestions?

15 years on the same pump? damn. Impressive!

The stock pump should flow enough... they push at 100 psi and the fuel pressure regulator brings it down to 40 something at idle and rises with throttle. And adjustable FPR will help...

If you upgrade the pump, I recommend Racetronix. At some point, I would.

I think the pump I have is OEM, and it won’t budge with direct battery current.. I had it out and tried. I’ll look into racetronix, but I think I’m gonna get a cheapie to run the flush thru the lines. The tank looks good inside. The car only has 50,000 miles. No tank varnish I can see, and the bit of gas still there is still stinky liquid.
Thanks, and if any other tips come to mind, let me know!

Should I look for the racetronix LT1 pump?

I'm running an upgraded walbro from racetronix. They sell it as a kit with a new gasket and stainless steel screws.

I installed a racetronix on my 92. Last pump I did. Worked very well.

Been busy with things around here, but I’m gonna give them a call pretty soon.

Anyone here ever changed the the rubber lines at the tank without removing the bumper? I can only imagine the required effort.

My 92 was old... and had miles... but I never felt those lines were problematic.

As for replacement? I don't think the bumper needs to come off. The rubber is either localized to the sender area, or connects to a rubber line that is accessible... I would need to see the area again to confirm.

Removing the rear bumper is a pain, on a good day.

I’ve never had to do it, but I did replace a couple taillight bulbs on my ‘88. Not fun, so that’s why I asked.
The hoses attach at the top of the pump/sender and go not quite a foot to the hard line. There, they’re attached by means of those steel crimped connections, identical to the flex portion of the front lines where they leave the frame and go to the side of the block.
I guess I’m wondering if it can be done by way of one guy up top, and one beneath the car, with the spare carrier out, allowing for access.
Any ideas are appreciated.

Ok, so I just spoke with Racetronix. In a bit I’ll order the stuff he recommended.
I’m having trouble getting the Teflon lined braided hose. A local shop with good reputation states the Aeroquip they sell is fuel line but not Teflon, and has had no issues to date.
Whaddya think guys? Should I get the Aeroquip, or wait a month for Teflon line?

So I’ve got the new pump installed in the level bracket and ready to go back ic. I also got the new in-tank harness for it.
I also got their new FPWH-014 wiring harness. It plugs into the factory plug for the pump and to the pump itself, goes forward And connects to the back of the alternator. What has me scratching my head is there’s a relay four feet from the pump plugs. That distance wants to put the relay in a very inconvenient mounting under the back of the car. Somewhere close to a muffler or above the spare tire carrier.
Because of the plandemic, they have odd hours and it’s been difficult to get tech on the line.
Do you guys have any experience with this?

I'll check mine tomorrow, I don't remember how I did it.

Edit - I see now that is a different harness than mine. You bought the harness that has an extra relay for an auxiliary fuel pump. Since most of those are mounted under the rear bumper or in that area that's why the relay is like that. Find a convenient spot and secure it.

Thanks for looking, but my harness doesn’t have a provision for a 2nd pump. It plugs into both vehicle harness and to the pump. If I understand it, it’s replacing the OEM relay as primary power to the pump.

I aplogize, it's been several years since I installed mine.

My harness did have the relay. It gets mounted under the car on a factory bolt.

Racetronix has their own tech forum you can sign up for. I pulled this picture from there.

There is nothing to apologize for. I absolutely appreciate the help!
I didn’t realize they had their own tech forum.
My overthinking Mind had me wondering if proximity to the muffler Was an issue, and what the limits of safe distance to the heat there are.
Thanks again Mat!

Just got done with the harness and final fuel pump install.
I ran the harness and hand the relay in the same spot as the picture shows. As I began to weave it forward I noticed the ABS wires going into the left rocker panel. After a bit of checking I was able to loosen the left rocker and feed the new harness up thru the rocker along side the ABS wires. Of course, all wires mentioned are in the plastic looms for safety.
Once up front I ran them the rest of the way up to the alternator to hook up.
Soon I’ll get the forward lines in while trying to get the rest of the intake put together.

Thanks again to Mat and Andy for the help.

One unrelated thing.
How long a time period do we have to edit a post?
If for instance I typo and discover it later my option to edit is gone.
Is that normal or do I have something wrong in my settings?
