On an 98 explorer, if the MAF sensor is bad, would that cause terrible gas mileage? Runs fine but the check engine light is on and thats what auto zone says it is. Just wondering because the gas mileage is sucky on it.

In my experience, if the Autozone clerk says it's bad, then it usually means its perfectly fine.
A MAF check engine lights trips when the MAF system isn't functioning properly. The maf system consists of way more than just a maf sensor. It also has relays, the computer, other engine sensors, wiring in between, all of which could throw a MAF code. You can cross your fingers and hope a $200 maf replacement solves it, or you can diagnose it with the manual to see what the actual problem is. I would also google the code # and 98 explorer to see what comes up. |
