Ok. Before I start I hope this wont turn into a CF bully, banning, mean match because this is a serious quiestion. I got underbody neons on my car and ever since I got it it made the brakes lock up. I thought by understanding that the transformer gives off radio waves, that if I put a metal shield around teh transformer, then it would fix it. It did.....for the most part....now its happeneing alittle but not as much....How can I completly block all the waves. I havent noticed because I barely turn them on. Im still debating of keeping them or just trying to make a quick dollar off of em but I still am curious as to how and why the waves interfere with teh ABS. I didn't think this would go in the audio section because there is no wiring into the actual car. It runs off the transformer....and thats it....Any answers as to why the ABS locks up. I am thinking the front wheels lock up. It's when I press the brakes that it happened.... Hope someone can give me the answer. I want to figure it out so bad. Appreciate it.

good question. One I actually hadn't considered.
Transformers, by their very nature, are emitters of EMF - Electro-Magnetic Interference. I remember years ago, I had a 1981 Toyota Celica (back in the 80s, I bought the car in 1984). The owners manual alerted the owner to not use a 2-way FM radio if you were using the cruise control. First question, where is the transformer located? You can't shield it enough, really. I suspect, due to the market for neon kits, that the transformer is an el cheapo POS, even tho they charge top dollar for them! Back to EMF - EMF is a radio wave. I can easily see how it could mess up the ABS. Now, when you say the brakes lock up, is this just randomly, or, when you hit them hard? gentle? I assume the neons are on when this happens? Personally, considering how cops hate them (stereotypes are a real bitch), and the fact they are effecting your cars safety, I would think about getting rid of them. |

Yea. I think they are going to go. I just wanna know how it does it. It's 12 volts. The shop mounted it on the frame rail I guess you could call it by the master cylinder and cruise control box. Im on my third transformer but its free for life because of the warranty....I think the heat is killing it. I am going to move it down by there horn so its away from the master cylinder just to see if it changes. Bogus, didn't you say you had strobe lights? Where? Those are asking for jail unless you are on private property. I was thinking about a lead box to shield it like they use in radiation jackets for x rays. Seems kind of dangerous though and useless now. Just a thought though. Yep. It was always when the neons were on. Like I said, I barely use them. One thing though, I think it heats up the brakelines. The metal lines right by the footwell on the drivers passenger sides are where the lights had to be mounted. The bulbs get pretty hot. If I do sell them, I want to be able to warn the new owner of them that they do upset the ABS so he/she will be cautious. Also, it's anytime you hit the brakes and just randomly. It doesnt do it constantly. The stereo shop had no idea what it was........

No the output, 12v is the input, surely it puts out alot more than 12v. The units (where i work) for the various neons around the club there put out 9,000 volts.

It doesnt matter about the size, there is one tranny doing just a small neon cappachino cup in the cafe, 9,000v output....

yea, that box is causing some issues.
I like the idea of moving it down. As an aside, the box is not interfering with the mechanicals, it is more than likely upsetting the ABS computer. I do have strobes, but they are cheapos. I use them for parades and caravans. If they are off, you can't see they are there, and there is no law against having them, the law is against using them. |

Strobe lights are scary for me. I don't want to cause cops a reason to arrest me or label me as a trouble maker. They do look like cop cars and I assume stay away from them alltogether. What do you mean when you say caravan? and where are yours mounted? How do you use them for parades??? How do you get involved in the parade??? In the day time or night time? Ive never thought of being in a parade....Interesting...Is there a paticular reason you drive in them? Must be cool.

caravans - anytime a group of Vettes are going to the same place at the same time. I figured this out when I was part of the Stars and Stripes tour... I led 120 Vettes over Outerbridge Crossing from NJ onto Staten Island. Trying to get them to follow me was annoying... Patrick, from Digital Corvettes, had strobes, and they were very useful for showing the rest of the pack who was leading. He was directly behind me and brought the group together with a quick blast.
Mine are mounted internal. You can't see them. I have one in each front cornering light and then one in each backup light. Parades... this is the #1 reason to join the local Corvette Club. They are always called to take cute HS girls down the street for home coming! It is great fun, too. I was in the homecoming parades for my HS, and two other neighbouring schools. The best part? Crawling along at 5mph, and seeing all your friends! It's so slow and so personal, that with the windows down and the roof off (the girl is up on the halo, sitting on a towel), that you can chat to any number of folks! I had one girl at my HS homecoming (the first year I did it, 2002). She was a freshman. Poor kid, never done anything like this. Was so scared she was gonna fall off! Her attendant was holding her right ankle, I had her left! Mind you, I graduated in 1983, so the only thing I was worried about was getting this kid to the football game safe and sound! The parades are great fun. It's a nice civic thing to do and just a fun way to get involved and see friends, too. I highly recommend it. |

I remember when I was young The best car I had back then was a camaro. It was a very nice car at the time and almost everyone in my school liked it. Except for the kid who keyed the hood. Wish I could find out who it was
