Danspeed1 Note to fellow Pre-92 C4 Owners Regarding Discontinued A/C Lines - Evaporator Tube

Hello,

I recently decided that I was going to finally fix the A/C system on my 89 C4. After retrofitting the system with all 134A equipment, a new accumulator (receiver-dryer), and 134A conversion valves I charged the system. Shortly after I noticed that the high-side valve was leaking.

From what I understand there is no fix for a leaking valve other than replacement. Among calling GM I was told that the line referred to as the "Evaporator Tube" (this line being the line that runs from the condenser to the fixed orifice tube, which incorporates pressure switches) was DISCONTINUED and is no longer available. No GM dealer in the country has it. I was also told that every year the line changed and that I specifically needed a line from an 89 otherwise it would not work.

Calling Mid-America, and Ecklers proved unsuccessful.

Luckily the Vette show out in PA was going on, and I was able to drive 4 hours on Saturday to it to purchased not one, but two used lines!

This is what you need to know: I got a line off an 87. Although the flares are different on both ends, if you have a cracked line, you can substitute one off of another L98 car. With a little bending, and O-rings from the year of the ORIGINAL VEHICLE THE LINE CAME OFF OF, it will fit and work properly. They are all the same size, they are just bent differently. Be careful or they will crack. I now have working A/C.

I figured I would post this thread, so if anyone does a search in the future, and has a cracked A/C line they will be able to use this as a guide on how find and fit a substitute line in place; all other sources will tell you the line has been discontinued, is year specific, and your SOOL.

Good to know. But I thought AC shops could custom bend those?

Aeroquip offers A/C hose and fittings. I do not have
first-hand knowledge of someone using this material
to replace OEM C4 lines, but it is used in the custom
car trade.

The hose is sold in three diameters

-06: FBF0600 (bulk)
-08: FBF0800 (bulk)
-10: FBF1000 (bulk)

It is also available in cut lengths of 3', 6' or 9'.
Replace the (x) with the desired length to determine
the appropriate p/n#

-06: FCF060x
-08: FCF080x
-10: FCF100x

There are straight, 45º, 90º and 135º fittings. All
but the 45º are available w/wo a charge port.

Hi Guys,

If you need GM ac hoses check ebay. I have had good luck with a ebay seller called partsladi. She carries all GM parts. I bought everything from her about a month ago when I replaced my ac system. I needed a new Compressor hose, 80 bucks from her. Good Luck.
