On the HSR? Its runners terminate flush with the base of
the plenum.

The reason the tests show more power with a plenum is
explained by the influence of Helmholtz Resonance on
cylinder filling.

Using the aftermarket throttle body on an HSR plenum may
influence the Helmholtz Resonance to whatever extent that
volume of the plenum changes. An individual runner intake
with four of these throttle bodies would be a different
matter.

The accessories at the front of a stock L98 engine present
some obstacles for unconventional routing of inlet air to
the throttle body.

Also, although not shown above, the master cylinder is
adjacent to the #1 & #3 runners.

Nothing impossible to overcome, just more head-scratchers
to solve along the way to completing such an undertaking ...

- No plenum redesign or fabrication required
- No bell-crank mechanism required for throttle actuation
- No special provision required for TV cable actuation
- No need to redesign Air filter/MAF/Bellows componetry
- No need to adapt IAC operation for aftermarket throttle bodies
- No need to adapt IAC/MAF/TPS harnesses

- Esthetically more pleasing appearance

Oh, and it is generally cheaper to mount the TB there
in front than anywhere else.

C6 owners interested in datalogging vehicle parameters
may want to look into an interface that enables data
from OEM sensors to be logged along with GPS position,
accelerometer loads and input from any external sensors
that a user has.

The interface consists of a cable that plugs into the
scan port of the vehicle and runs to the datalogger.
Hook-up is plug-and-play. Here are the parameters that
are drawn from OEM sensors by the interface.

1. Engine RPM
2. Throttle Position
3. Throttle Pedal Position
4. Oil Temperature
5. Water Temperature
6. Transmission Temperature
7. Intake Temperature
8. Battery Volts
9. Wheel RPM (all four wheels)
10. Yaw
11. Torque
12. Horsepower
13. Brake Pedal Position
14. Gear Position

Vehicles like my C4 with ECM/PCM that DON'T support this
ODB interface require require hardware to be purchased and
mounted to log inputs beyond the system defaults. Even
finding a suitable source for the default RPM capability
is sometimes a challenge and may require a third-party
signal conditioner. Other external inputs can cost $200+
per channel.

However, for less than the price of three external sensors
(and none of the installation drama), folks with the C6
platform can just plug in the new interface and receive
14 channels. Of these, the wheel RPM & Yaw inputs are
particulary remarkable because they present more challenge
and cost to implement through external sensors.

Here is a link to a document from RacePak. It mentions
a contact person for further details (pr aht racepak.com.)
The go-to guy for my G2X questions in the past has been
Tim Anderson (tim aht racepak.com.)

Want to learn a new skill or pick up fresh techniques for
additional enjoyment with an existing hobby? Take a look
at the technical videos available from SmartFlix.com.

I've rented several of their DVDs and have been very
satisfied with the service, product condition and policies.
Since I am an international customer, their domestic free

outweighs the downside.

Has anyone else here given them a try since I posted about

SmartFlix that you've had good results with?

This engine/car is not my daily driver, but it's driven mostly on street with
a few road races a year. Now, I'm not too concerned about street drivability,
but I'd like this engine to last.

What are your opinions, suggestions.......

My vote is that an engine with a 3.75" stroke won't be a
durable, reliable powerplant if it is roadraced to 7,500
periodically.

Piston speed at 7,500 RPM for this combination is 4,690 feet
per minute. It is high to begin with and there is no margin
for mishaps. Miss a shift or overrun on a downshift and
see 7,800 RPM? - piston speed rises to nearly 4,900.

If you want durability and do not want to be frequently
inspecting and maintaining the engine, then aim for a
red line of 7,000 and have HP peak several hundred RPM
below this.

Otherwise, if 7,500 remains your goal, then choose a
shorter stroke to bring piston speeds down at this RPM.

An ice shelf is an extension of a land-based glacier
reaching out over an area of water.

In the case of the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf in the arctic, it
extends off from the coast of Ellesmere Island.

Read more here: The Calving of the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf

Ditto for ice shelves in the antarctic, such as Larsen A,B & C.

The speed of the break ups has been very unsettling for
shelf watchers who have acknowledged that earlier models
predicting far slower rates of decline failed to take into
consideration several aspects that are now recognized to
accelerate the progress of collapse.

A very serious matter, indeed.

I didn't take the video as belittling the issue.

We've discussed the ice picture here before and the view
from some quarters is that change happens as part of the
cycle of ebb & flow. Arguements have been made that the
pendulum swings and the ice will be back.

Seeing developments like these in the Arctic and those
occuring in the Antarctic ice shelves have certainly been
capturing my attention.

While I have been influenced by the arguements from
scientists who make out the causes to be climate change
arising from mankind's dredging up of long buried carbon
sources for use to fuel the present lifestyle, I have time
for those who maintain otherwise.

Regardless of the causes, the apparent consequences are
daunting.

By now most people on both sides of the gender fence have
heard the message aimed toward women promoting regular
examinations for lumps.

But what about men? Cancers of various kinds are a leading
cause of premature death - many can be treated if discovered
early enough. Yet, there is nowhere near the emphasis on
prompting men to be more proactive as there is for women.

That is beginning to change. In the interests of helping
to spread the word ...

Further to news reported in late July, the extent of the
ice loss has proven to be greater than initially recognized.

Canada's Arctic ice shelves break apart, drift away
OTTAWA (AFP)
2008-09-04

Two ice shelves in Canada's far north have lost massive
sections since August while a third ice shelf now is
adrift in the Arctic Ocean, said researchers Wednesday who
blamed climate change.

The entire 50 square-kilometer (19 square-mile) Markham Ice
Shelf off the coast of Ellesmere Island broke away in early
August and is now adrift, while two sections of the nearby
Serson Ice Shelf detached, reducing its mass by 60 percent
or 122 square kilometers (47 square miles).

Ward Hunt Ice Shelf, which halved in July, lost an
additional 22 square kilometers (8.5 square miles).

"These changes are irreversible under the present climate
and indicate that the environmental conditions that have
kept these ice shelves in balance for 4,000 years are no
longer present," said Trent University's polar expert Derek
Mueller.

Canada's summer ice shelf losses now total 214 square
kilometers (82.5 square miles), which is more than three
times the area of Manhattan Island, the researchers said.

Extensive cracks in Ward Hunt, the largest remaining ice
shelf, means it will continue to disintegrate in the coming
years, said Luke Copland, director Ottawa University's
cryospheric research lab.

The SBC and BBC had their fuel pumps positioned at the
front passenger side since day one.

The routing of L98 fuel lines replicates the path used for
the previous carbureted generation(s). The path for the
LTx marks the first significant revision since the Chev V8
debuted in '55.

A lot of cars, trucks, commercial vehicles, boats, and
who knows what else have operated for their entire
existance with the fuel line configured to run near the
block and exhaust.

Fuel line maintenance is not given sufficient consideration
on North American vehicles. I am unsure of the reason,
perhaps OEM materials and environmental/operating
conditions enable NA fuel lines to last longer? Euro car
enthusiasts in the know make a point of replacing flexible
sections of fuel lines on a 7-10 yr basis. Early C4s have
now been in service for up to 25 yrs. Tick, tock ...

Gasoline possesses a significant amount of energy and there
are no shortage of videos depicting the consequences of
a fuel fire.

The typical enthusiast is often under-equipped for fighting
a fire at home or on the road. Hazards from a fuel line
leak may be compounded by the quantity of fuel in the tank,
gravity, siphoning action and the difficulty of accessing
locations for leaks. Fire caused by fuel flash-igniting on
hot adjacent surfaces may be momentarily extinguished only
to re-ignite when more fuel siphons out and contacts still
-hot surfaces (or is ignited by sparks from electrical
wires whose insulation has been compromised.)

There may be little left of the vehicle by the time the
firemen arrive. If the car is in a garage, a vehicle fire
threatens the building, contents and occupants.

Do not take chances with fuel lines. The C4 L98 lines run
adjacent to the passenger side exhaust manifold and the
flexible hose segments are near #2 exhaust port. A fuel
leak at start-up of a cold engine may not ignite if
discovered quickly, but my vote is that a fuel leak on a
warm engine has a high likelyhood of igniting. On an
engine that is working (road/track) it is a certainty.

The rubber sections of the OEM hard lines have collars
swaged into place at the unions where the rubber and steel
lines meet. These unions are similar in appearance to
power steering lines.

Resized Image

A first step might be to check whether replacement supply
and return lines are available from GM. If not, then
check aftermarket sources like Classic Tube - they list
FI feed and return lines in either OE or SS styles for
89-90 C4s.

I am unaware of whether field repair of these OEM types of
unions is possible. Presumably, there may be local
industrial hose firms that have the equipment to do so, or
perhaps national firms might offer a rebuild service.

Alternatively, it may be possible to use products such
as Aeroguip's Versil-Flare Flareless AN Tube Nuts and
Ferrules to modify the existing lines to accept a section
of braided hose to replace the OEM rubber hose. (Note
that bend radius of SS braid may not be adequate for this
purpose.) One requirement for this approach is for there
to be tube nuts and ferrules available in the correct size
to fit the metal portions of the OEM fuel line.

Resized Image

A different, more common approach seen in the past is to
use Metric-to-AN adapter fittings to replace the supply &
return line sections. The OEM sections that run from the
fuel filter under the passenger footwell forward to the L98
fuel rail are removed, adapter fittings are installed in
the OEM fittings and then hoses with AN fittings are used
to complete the supply & return fluid paths.

As it happens, refreshment is something that is never
lacking at the neighbor's. They run a home-based business
and distribute imported wine around the province.

The nature of the business means, or at least meant, a lot
of entertaining. The summer barbecues next door have been
cut back in the past couple of years. Last night harkened
back to the days of yore.

On such nights there isn't much hope of going to bed at

the food, beverages and society.

Turns out that the photographer was responsible for the

a good photographer doesn't fall into the trap.

The thing about our yard is that the neighbors on the

facing across both back yards. Great for watching the
summer sun rise over the trees in the morning - provided
you ignore whatever project happens to be underway in

Man, they've lived there long enough to know better.

A wedding for one of their children was held in the back
yard, too, come to think of it. Because of past history,
I was less inclined to make a contribution in that instance.

Hope everyone's done for the season because I've got some

We have some neighbors with whom we have what I consider
to be an ideal relationship. While we exchange pleasantries
and help each other out when things come up, generally we
each go about our business independent of the other and
don't spend a lot of time on one another's patio.

Well, they held a backyard wedding for their first born today.

Knowing that the wedding was approaching, I caught up on
routine yard work and added some extra brushing around the
perimeter. Put some things away and built a lattice fence
to obscure work in progress on a shed.

It made for a nice improvement but didn't take care of every
detail. Call it a twenty-footer, squint and everything looks
fine. All in all, I was content that I'd done my part to help.

This morning I look outside to see that someone at the
neighbor's place had set up the guest chairs - they were
all facing our house.

I am sure it was a classic case of myopia, all they could
see were the trees along the property line that would
nicely frame the ceremony - failing to notice the pile of
project lumber and off-cuts in the background that would
stand out prominently in the photos if it remained there.

Some hours later, the view was improved.

Wedding has gone off smoothly. Guests have eaten and now
I hear the band playing - time to go enjoy the entertainment.

I believe the extrusions for snowmobiles typically have one
or more internal ribs, creating two or more longitudinal
passage ways for fluid flow.

It is curious to see how little information is returned
using search terms that come to mind for locating primary
vendors of the material.

Yes, we conducted several studies. Some were double-blind.

That's awfully redneck of you.

I have a set of Guinness pint glasses.

The widget that Guinness uses to create a head rattles
back and forth when people drink from the can - even
rednecks find this rather gauche.

The canned Guinness tastes better from a glass than
bottled does.

Anyone taste Guinness from bottles?

Traditionally it has been available here in cans, but
recently it was available packaged in bottles. In fact
that was all the store had on that occaision, so I wound
up trying it.

No, these are different. Sleds are rated for upwards of
100-120 HP - in several situations they are called upon
to make it and this produces heat that has to be dispersed.

Three examples of the many configurations

The original application that prompted the thought is
liquid cooling systems for snowmobiles.

A plethora of shapes of exchangers are mounted in the
tunnels and under running boards of sleds. Some of the
large displacement sleds have several discrete kinds
of exchangers scattered around the underside.

With the variety of exchangers, there are an equal number
of methods of connecting coolent lines. Ideally, a
suitable unit with an fittings would turn up. However,
keep in mind that these are extrusions - it is does not
require rocket science to cut, weld, join relatively
thick sections of cast aluminum.

While I would want to test to see what kind of pressure
drop occured when intended for engine oil requirements, I
am more than confident that flow would be adequate for
transmission purposes.

What I have not found is anything that gives some insight
into the heat transference properties of such devices.

A search brings up sources for new and recycled exchangers
ranging in price from sub-$40 to plus-$100.

A frequent issue when tracking vehicles is that of elevated
fluid temperatures.

Various styles of oil-to-air and a few oil-to-water types
of exchangers are available to help shed the additional
heat.

Something I have not seen in use are the extruded section
fluid-to-air coolers. The reduced efficiency of this style
(versus tube/fin/plate styles) is offset by the possibility
of choosing coolers with greater surface area and of
mounting them in non-traditional locations, keeping heat
load off existing coolers in traditional locations.

The extruded sections are very durable and impervious to
debris impact. They do not rely on airflow through tight
passageways and thus are not subject to clogging. Typically
the ones I am familiar with are under 1" thick, a few inches
wide and deployed in varying lengths. These can be joined
in series &/or in parallel to increase total cooling surface
area. The shallow depth section opens up several possibilities
for mounting.

Aeroquip offers A/C hose and fittings. I do not have
first-hand knowledge of someone using this material
to replace OEM C4 lines, but it is used in the custom
car trade.

The hose is sold in three diameters

-06: FBF0600 (bulk)
-08: FBF0800 (bulk)
-10: FBF1000 (bulk)

It is also available in cut lengths of 3', 6' or 9'.
Replace the (x) with the desired length to determine
the appropriate p/n#

-06: FCF060x
-08: FCF080x
-10: FCF100x

There are straight, 45º, 90º and 135º fittings. All
but the 45º are available w/wo a charge port.

Just this past Saturday, I was listening to a new CD when
it slowly dawned on me that the engineer had added LP-like
snap, crackle, pop 'noise' between tracks. I bet there are
many who won't even get the joke if they notice.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll look into the devices
mentioned.

I've stayed away from digital because of the perception
that it consumes more time & resources while offering
less convenience and durability - compared to disks.

A fresh high capacity player would serve my needs until
such time as music is no longer available on disk - I
suppose that would just increase the number of disks that
would need to be converted.

My cd player w/ large capacity carousel is kaput and
choices for a replacement appear to limited to several
-year-old Sony and Pioneer models. I suppose the species
is obsolete and the mfrs have moved on.

What is the best/least painful method to transfer hundreds
of CDs to digital format, assuming I make the move to the
MP3 world.
