Hello All,

I am trying to replace the front rubber brake hoses on my 86 vette. I have returned two sets of rubber hoses that are incorrect for my application. The first was a GM auto parts supply, and Ecklers. The problem is where the threaded socket connects to the steel brake line with the flange. My threaded socket is deep and the inside is recessed down in. The replacement brake line sockets are not deep and had a male protruding flange inside the socket. Therefore I can not screw the steel threaded flange to the rubber hose socket. My car is an early 86 with cast iron heads. Has anyone ever had this problem? I must replace the hoses because one is collapsed and pulls left when braking. I will take some pics and post later. Thanks.

Hi,

Good idea Bogus. I have a place near me called Vette Brakes in St. Pete, Fl. I will go and see them. I just dont know why my vette would be different from other vettes. I know the previous owner did not change the steel brake lines on the frame. Since its an early 86, I am wondering if 84 and 85 brakes hoses are different. Its a pain in the a.., but a learning experience too. I took a few pics, but had a tough time with focusing. Take care.

Here's the end on my '85 front line.

I recall the end of the rubber line matches your description. I want to say it's a female 10mm flare fitting. (not inverted flare, which sounds like what they sent you).

The steel line fitting looked the same as the brake lines at the master cylinder do.

Hey Guys,

Yes, the threads are the same but my brake hoses have a deep threaded socket. But, I figured out the problem. I purchased two sets of GM brake hoses and they did not fit.
It turns out that when C4's were built in the 80's GM used two types of brake systems, AC Delco and Bendix. My 86 has the Bendix brake system. I went to advance auto and looked at their computer monitor with pictures of both brake lines. I could not see inside of the treaded socket but I looked real hard at the crimped ends and mine is shorter than the AC Delco. I took a chance and ordered the bendix. They came in yesterday and Bingo, those were the correct Brake hoses. I asked many Corvette guys and no one knew, not even the auto parts stores knew. I talked to an old timer who was a Corvette mechanic for GM for 25 years. He tells me this today at a Corvette event. I appreciate all the help guys. Sometimes I feel like a Corvette detective that has to solve many mysteries. Brake lines are in, New master cylinder, bled brakes and Frankie is ready to roll again. Take care.

Joe, based on your fine detective skills, I've promoted you to the official rank of Corvette Detective.

Coffee and donuts will be served in the break room.
