One of the 1st onboard videos

F5000 racing

Quote:
A lap with Scooter Patrick's Surtees TS5 Formula A/F5000 car in St. Jovite 1969. The RACING SCENE 1970 Color, 90 min. It's the real stuff, photographed at real races, and you go racing with James Garner . . , star of "Grand Prix." But, this time it's for real, he owns the cars and takes you behind the scenes at Sebring, Daytona, Limerock, St. Jovite and even some of his off road racing in Baja, Mexico in his Bad Bronco. Some of Jim's playmates are Parnelli Jones, John Surtees, Roger Penske, Mario Andretti, Sam Posey, Scooter Patrick, Pat Fahey, Dick Smothers, Dave Jordan, Ed Leslie, Lothar Motschenbacher, Bob Bondurant, Larry Berquist, Fred Baker, Dick Simon, Bill Brack, Chuck Trowbridge, Rex Ramsey, Ronnie Bucknum, Bob Brown, Mike Hiss, Chuck Dietrich, Robert Fischetti, Max Kelly, Peter Rehl, John Mahler, Rich Galloway and hundreds more. You will see the real blood, sweat and tears, like Jim said, "Why couldn't it be like "Grand Prix", when you do it for real, it ain't like the movies!" Producer Barry Scholer and director Andy Sidaris filmed for nine months. John Srevens devised a tiny camera the size of a grapefruit that recorded action that will make your hair Stand on end! Made from 16mm, the film has a few scratches, but this is one you won't want to miss. James Garner, we can't thank you enough!

Ever see how they got the action shots in Grand Prix? They took a freekin' GT-40, removed the tail and put a camera platform on top of the engine!

I've seen the making of pretty cool.

That also took cars and towed them with it.

Then there was the helicopter flying close to the ground.

They said they'd never get to do it again do to the insurance.

EDIT:
Here's a clip showing filming in Monaco

Some of you may remember this, but a year ago, April, bastet and I went to the Lynnwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood. This theater is at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences HQ (you know, the Oscars people!).

They were offering a special series on movies that had won for sound and film editing. The first film was Grand Prix. It was a brand new 65mm Cinerama print, off the original Warner Bros negative. No surround sound, either! The original 6 track stereo! Who needs Hi-Def???

Can you say IMPRESSIVE? It was quite the experience. The screen at the Dunn theater is huge; it's not one of these dinky multiplex things. Oh, and the tix were only $5.00 each.
