Seems like I'm in the market for a new sound system for the 87! Speakers are crackling in the rear and system is ready for an update.
Need some input on unit, and speakers.

I'm not sure if you are double DIN or 1.5 - If 2DIN I can recommend the Pioneer AVH-P3200BT. Its a really nice head unit in that is under $500 but has all the features of a $1000 unit.

Ron, I personally think you should change them out, but that's because I did the same There are many good aftermarket brands. Unlike what some guys will suggest, you don't need a $2,000 stereo system! You can upgrade to a very nice system buying new parts for under $4-500 dollars. If you buy used, you can save even more. As far as brands for head units, I personally am a fan of pioneer. That's what I have. I like alpine for budget speakers although there are many more out there. Figure out what your intended uses are as well as your budget and we can go from there. Also check out my link as far as what went into my swap out.

Matthew

Mine that I did:

Itlgo2's nice install (probably more than you need!):

I checked out Don's info on the Pioneer unit. Your right about total cost... I'm figuring to spend under 800.00. From day one when I bought the vette new I never was very impressed with the Bose system! Now I'll correct it.
Thanks for the input Matthew. I appreciate it.

ok... then you don't need to hear what I was gonna suggest.

It was gonna be way more than 800.00!

Is there any way to fit a 2DIN in the earlier cars? If not there are still a lot of nice systems out there that will fall into your budget range. I also think Pioneer has a single DIN AVH receiver in their line-up.

It looks like 800.00 is way to conservative! may have to bump that up quit a bit!
Honestly Don I have not installed a stereo unit and speakers in years, not that I can't do it, but units have changed with a lot of neat stuff! I have not kept up with the newest innovations.

Hey, me neither. I just started looking at this stuff a few months ago and found the Pioneer unit through my research. If a pro-audio guy looked at my install he'd probably puke, but it works pretty good and I didn't botch anything up. That's what mattered to me. Anyhow, I think if you look around you will be pleased with what's available out there now for a lot less money than a few years ago. I also think if you have a modest amount of mechanical skill and the ability to follow instructions you should be ok with most head unit installs. Speakers --- Well I don't know about all that. I think Matt and Andy had some good inputs on the speakers questions.
