Digital dash speedo acts funny. Sometimes stops working after hitting a bump. Starts back on the next. Quit one time and I wiggled the connector at the tranny and it started back. Also when working it acts like it is on a delay. Slow reaction time. Takes a while to read the correct speed once rolling. Speed sensor failing? Dash issue? Definite connection issue. But it still reacts slowly when working. Ideas? Hope someone else has been down this road and will give me some insight. Thanks in advance...

I would start by cleaning up the connector at the speed sensor.

I would not be surprised if there was a wiring connector issue down there. I would focus there, first.

The wiring of pre-1991 American cars is not all that good. The SAE required a change be made to the composition of the insulation and the plastics so they hold up better in the hot and chemically laden engine compartment.

My first suspect would be the connector and the wiring. Suggest cleaning it up like Andy said and also check the weatherpak connection, then work your way up the wiring. The insulation on older cars tends to shrink back and leave exposed copper, too, so check that.

Or the clip holding the VSS drive gear to the output shaft is loose / broken allowing the gear to spin?

Good point. I wonder if that gear could be partially stripped, too? Pete told me the original ones go bad over time when I was doing my trans stuff.
