I'm going to install my new Christmas toy today. Anyone have a correct wiring digram for the 2 C4 harnesses? I was just going to splice all the wires and join them to the wires on the new harness with some crimp caps. I can't remember where the different colors go to. If not I guess I'll be using my multimeter to sort them out. It's a non-bose system.

I found a local shop that has an install wiring harness. I'm going to pick it up tongiht. Hopefully it's color coded to the DVD player harness and that end.

These are the colors for most radios. They should be very close to what you need.

The wiring harness was no good. The standard Chevy did not fit fit the Corvette factory harness. Looks like I'll by going using the multimeter and splicing the factory wires.

Anyone know what this metal box is? Boosted reciever/antenna maybe? Is there a regular connectin to the antenna running up to the radio or do I need to run a new one?

Thanks

Don't forget to do the resistor mod at the head unit plug or you will get a flashing "sys" error due to the open illumination circuit.

I bet the connectors on the harness adapter they gave you were too big? You may have been given an earlier style GM radio adapter harness. The pic's you posted look exactly like the connectors in a '88 up chevy full size pickup. They too us a central "brain"/amp (possibly) which receives the signal from the head unit and sends it out to the speakers. If you would like to try to retain the stock harness connectors without cutting/splicing it would be worth going back and taking a look at the pickup connector. I would almost bet they are the same.

There are a couple of Metra pre-made wiring harnesses that might work, depending on your install.

Metra 70-1856

Metra 70-1857

You would still need to do the resistor mod at the head unit connector.

it's a TSB that stops the SYS from flashing. It's hit and miss...

The headunit is part of the CCM circuit. Because of this, if the head unit is missing, it sets off the code... it's no biggie, really. The resistors simply trick it out. I will get the info you need.

The resistor mod is to keep the CCM from flashing the "sys" error message due to removing the factory stereo head unit which causes an open in the factory dimmer circuit. The resistors add a load to the circuit fooling the CCM into believing the factory stereo is still in place.

I saw the SYS flash on my way home yesterday. I figured thats what you were referring to with the transistor mod. There's no way to get rid of the SYS in the tune? I'll pick up the transistors at Radio Shack since I have to stop there anyway. What is the yellow wire it is referring to? Can I just use the orange wire off the harness since it is 12v and I will not be using it? See post below.

From JEFNLSA on CAC
Here it is:

If "SYS" is displayed in the LCD section of the instrument panel cluster after the customer installs a new (aftermarket) stereo, he will need to do the following:

1. Buy (2) 1 kilo-ohm 1/2 watt resistors. [Radio Shack part # 271-023. They sell them as a 2pk for .29 cents.]
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Remove the receiver.
4. Connect one end of both resistors to ignition power. (Yellow wire in the car)
5. Connect the other end of one resistor to the purple/white wire in the car.
6. Connect the other end of the second resistor to the grey/black wire in the car.
7. Cover all connections and completely cover the resistors.
8. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

It works.....

I finally got home to check my FSM. This is what is listed for the stock in dash radio harness.

C1 12065873
7-way F micro-Pack 100 series
BLK

C2 12064980
9-way F micro-Pack 100 series
BLK

Radio Control Head Unit

---COLOR--------CKT----DESCRIPTION

1--ORN----------440-----BATTERY INPUT
2--PPL/WHT-----1382----LED CONTROL
3--GRY/BLK------1381----LCD CONTROL
4--GRY----------8-------INCANDESCENT LIGHT CONTROL
5--DK GRN/WHT--817-----SPEED COMPENSATED VOLUME CONTROL
6--DK GRN-------835-----DATA LINK
8--PPL-----------1375---IGNITION IN
9--DK GRN-------835-----DATA IN/OUT
10-BRN/WHT-----367-----LEFT AUDIO OUT
11-DK GRN/WHT--368-----RIGHT AUDIO OUT
12-BLK/WHT------372-----AUDIO COMMON
13-RED/WHT-----1364----BATTERY POWER IN
14-BLK-----------1051----RADIO GROUND IN
15-PNK-----------608----+14 VOLTS IN

It looks like I can use...
4--GRY--------For Dimmer Input
8--PPL--------For 12V Input with Ignition On
13-RED/WHT--For Constant 12V Power Source In
14-BLK--------For Radio Ground

I will still need to run new speaker wires. The FSM only lists Left and Right at the harness. I'm wondering how the front/back fade works. Maybe thats what one of those data lines is. I will also need to run the antenna line from the rear compartment reciever. The only thing I'm missing is the antenna line. I think it is the DK GRN with the description DATA IN/OUT. Thats what the wiring diagram is showing in the FSM. Anyone done it this way before? I'm going to try and finish this up today.

Off to Radio Shack

The yellow wire listed above is the yellow wire from the tuner module connector in the rear compartment, which you need to extend to the aftermarket radio in the dash. This yellow wire is switched 12v and is what you should use for the resistors and the switched 12v requirement of the new stereo.

The wiring harnesses I listed earlier will extend this yellow wire to the dash of the car.

If I'm following the FSM wiring diagram correctly the yellow wire you are referring to is actually the 9-DK GRN-DATA IN/OUT wire on the factory in-dash wiring harness. I got a 10v reading on this when testing with my multimeter. I think this is how it may work... I will connect one end of both resistors to the 9-DK GRN-DATA then one end of one resistor to the 2-PPL/WHT-LED CONTROL and the end of the other resistor to the 3-GRY/BLK-LCD CONTROL.

So what method does everyone use to connect the resistor? Sauder? I've had very bad luck saudering in the past. Will crimp caps work?

Thanks again for everyones help.

NO - Do NOT use the DK GRN wire. The DK GRN wire is a DATA connection between the tuner module and the head unit. You need a switched 12v circuit for one end of both resistors, which the yellow wire at the rear tuner module provides.

Rick, I taught solder school for years, and specific issues you are having?
What kind of iron and tip are you using? are you using paste flux or liquid? what are you using to hold your parts while you flow the solder?

To answer your question though. You can use the crimp clips if you want as long as you have enough slack in the wire to accommodate the crimp tool and the connection. Solder and heat shrink tubing will always be the best connection in the long run.

hmm..

The FSM schematic is showing the 9-DK GRN-DATA IN/OUT wire as being the same as the YEL wire going from the Radio Receiver to Radio Control Head. Maybe I'm reading it wrong. I'll be back with a scan of the schematics in an hour or two.

Thanks

I have a '96 FSM. The 96 FSM page 8A-150-0 shows that the yellow wire is fed from the RDO fuse and goes straight to the tuner module in the rear. The tuner module does feed the PPL wire to the radio control head with switched power, but I would not recommend using it. As soon as you disconnect and or remove the tuner module this circuit will be open. In any event, the DK GRN wire is a DATA wire that connects the rear tuner module to the radio control head.

You need to extend the wires from the rear tuner module connectors to the new stereo in the dash. The yellow wire will be one of the wires you extend, in addition to the speaker wires, power antenna control and the antenna coax wire.

Do you have the Bose amplified speakers? Do you intend to reuse your factory speakers?

On your new stereo, do you intend to use speaker outputs or RCA outputs?

I'll have to wait until tomorrow to work on this. I get held up buying last minute fireworks and running to the store. I went for an hour drive today and had no sys light. I wonder if it was just the battery being drained yesterday. I had to jump it after I had the doors open most of the day working on stuff. Radio Shack only had 2.2k Ohm resistors. They said they didn't sell the 2k Ohm resistors. Maybe I won't have to deal with it after all. I have a non-bose standard system. I picked up the speaker wire and antenna extension today. I am going to re-run standard 16 gauge speaker wire to all four. I have factory speakers installed now but they are in bad shape so I will be replaceing with somethiong better soon. Probably 6x9's on all four after some cutting.

Rick,

How goes the DVD install? Any pics of the installed unit? Fiirst Impressions?

I have a Kenwood DVD/Navigation in my Toyota Matrix that works real nice wish it was in my Vette. I think after I get it running again I'll save up for the DVD/Navigation for the Vette.

Assuming my car remains reliable and doesn't need any service, I hope this will be my next purchase for the Vette. I am very curious to see pix of the finished installation. Although I am more interested in a stereo with touch controls than a DVD player.

A friend with a '93 has this type of setup in his car. It looks really nice. The first time I saw it, I was like... NO WAY! It looks too cheezy. But after driving around in his car for awhile, I really learned to dig it.

Congrats on the score, and I hope it works out well for you!

The Kenwood unit in my other car has a touch screen and pushbotton controls for most functions. Once you have a touch screen, you'll be spoiled rotten.
As far as the DVD, I thought the same that I wouldn't want a DVD in my dash, but it really shines during those times you have to sit in the car and wait for someone or even for music videos.

The install got delayed. I got up and stepped outside for a few seconds and quickly ran back in. It was way to cold to be working on the car that day and I've been sick over the holidays. It was mostly the wind though. If I had to guess I'd say it felt like it was in the 40's. Maybe I should move to Florida. Luckily by Saturday it is supposed to be back in the 70's.
