I saw these sockets the other day. Has anyone used them or is familiar with them?

never heard of them, but it sure looks like an interesting trick.

I use bolt extractors. But they are cheap enough and rather effective... hell, if the bolt is that bad off, do I care if it gets messed up some more?

This is what S.K. hand tools call spline drive, they make sockets and wrenches that are like this. They will work on rounded off bolts quite well. The idea behind these is solid, the manufacturer of these particular ones is anybodys guess. I would GUESS these are imported from China. The S.K. version is U.S.A. made and good quality. Titan maker "imports" similar socket sets for less money and the quality is o.k. and if it's for a backyard guy they will work quite well. If you are interested let me know as I sell tools for a living. John

I can't really tell what they are from the small pic. I use these from Craftsman. Well worth the money. In the top 10 tools I own.

Since we are discussing tools has anyone tried this set?

Looks effective, but I would probably only use it on the nasty stuck bolts. Because it looks like it would chew up your bolts over time if used regularly.

I've borrowed those extractors at work before, but the one I've used had a small drill bit on the other end so you could just flip it around and back it out. The hardware is ruined after this of course, but they work well for smaller screws. You just gotta watch using them in a drill because they break kinda easy. Too high of a setting and it will pop right away. The clutch on the drill usually provides a good impact to keep it biting. As far as those spline drive sockets go, I love them for what I do. Alot of the hardware I have to pull out is covered in heavy duty sealant and lots of gunk and the splines cut right through and grab awesome.

I've run into the Handyman club through my other hobby, furniture-making. They are considered something just short of a scam. I wouldn't touch anything they sell with a ten-foot pole.
