Sand is way better than hitting grass.

You got that right! I have three guys I know in the past couple months that have gone off at VIR and at Summit Point in West Virginia. At first glance it looked innocuous, but the damage reports were anything but. However two of the cars were big dollar vehicles; one a new ZR1 and the other a 2010 Callaway Grand Sport. I think the Callaway had $18K worth of damage and the ZR1 had about $25k. This was from a nice little drive across the grass at speed. The third one was a 2003 03 04 Z06 and his damages were a lot less, but still would be a showstopper for me. He lost a nice splitter, brake ducts and bent up some steering stuff. Still looking at a few grand. Road Racing or even HPDEs like these guys were doing is very expensive when things get loose!!

That's unusual for HPDEs, but our saying: the more expensive the car, the dumber the driver.

The thing with grass is that when you hit it, you actually speed up (even with the brakes on). Sand is OK but doesn't slow the car down at high speed.
Gravel traps do a better job but most of us hate them because it takes so long to get the cars out and we hate running laps behind the pace car.

The best is just more asphalt/concrete, it slows the cars down better.

I don't know what Summit's like now but there used to be a chitload of trees to hit.

It's nuts. I watched that live (on TV). The camaro driver was OK, the Mazda driver was stuck in the car and had to be extracted. He came out on a stretcher.

I hate that stuff. This guy has a team of dudes going over every inch or his car before every race and still had brake failure. I just have me and half the time I don't get to do a full inspection. I love it when HPDE drivers get irritated when they don't pass tech. How are they missing the fact that it's their life in danger here?

"Touch every bolt" is the motto, the reality is different.

Tell me about it.

" You mean I have to take all that stuff out of the back and the trunk? Where am I going to put it?"

" That 30 lb amplifier on the back seat's not a problem, the wires will hold it in place."

" Those grooves in the rotor don't matter, it's only been making noise for a couple of days."
