dangriff Brake Discs - 12in or 13in ?

Hi

Help !

I have found great difficulty in getting hold of brake discs for my Corvette C4 1994 in Abu Dhabi where I live.

As I am holidaying back 'home' in the UK for a couple of weeks I aim to purchase discs all round and then take them back to UAE in my kids suitcases.

Much to my dismay, I now understand that the front discs could be 12 or 13 inch. My question now is - which size are they (NB I cannot measure them !) ? Is there any way to find out (NB I have my chassis number with me) ? What is most likely ?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Dan

Dan

Go to the following URL and enter your VIN into the search box.

http://www.compnine.com/vid.php?vin=

It will come up with a build sheet for your specific car.

About two thirds of the way down the sheet you will see a line that may state the following:

JL9 BRAKE SYSTEM,POWER,FRONT AND REAR DISC,ANTILOCK FRT & RR DISC ANTILOCK BRK(JL9)

If yours has the JL9 code (bold text above) it means that the car has 12" discs. If the code is J55 it means that you need 13" for the front and 12" for the rear.

I hope this helps.

If he has the base JL9 12" brakes on his car 13" brakes will not fit unless he changes brackets and calipers. Probably not what he wants to do at this point.

I agree that would be a good option if he had the budget and knew what parts to buy. He could have HD brake option J55 and not have to worry about the conversion.

He needs to verify this through his build sheet first.

Many thanks for all of your help.

I have checked the VIN against the compnine website and my car is the JL9 - standard option as I expected. Stock brakes are fine for me now as I don't really want the expense of the uprated calipers etc at the moment.

Dan,

Before you order - just to be sure - those VIN calculators list things that were standard or available for that car, not necessarily what is on the car.

Does your Vette have any suspension options?

** Edit ** I stand corrected. That looks like an accurate representation of my car's build sheet.

Impressive. I would like to test others. It claims that mine is literally 1 of 1 built with the combo mine has. Also curious.

I checked it out pretty good and that is my exact sheet that I was provided. Very interesting indeed!

Mine has two others! Triplets!

Same here! I had see others, and all they are is some electronic form of what could be, vs what is.

You know, the more I think about it. How is it possible that there were only two other Corvettes in 1994 exactly like mine? There had to be hundreds. They made bunches of white, black and red Corvettes in 1994.

You are right Don, I did not consider where he is and how he is getting the brakes back. I wrote thinking this is how I would do or want it. should have finished my coffee this morning before going to Corvette Guru.Com.

yea, but then start weedling through the options... bose? climate controls? transmission?

Mine is a manual with climate and base suspension and brakes, but with sport seats and power, plus bose. A car like mine should have had Z07, too.

No worry Bill! You were correct, I just wanted him to be absolutely sure what he needed. However, he could be fooled and a prior owner could have put C5 brakes on it or the Grand Sport Caliper like many of us have and still need a 13" rotor. But at least he will have a good baseline to start from.

He really should check the sticker in the storage compartment behind the passenger seat for the RPO codes.
