qwik6 How do you align the waterpump shaft splines?

I'm looking for anyone who can give me some advice on how to align the waterpump driveshaft splines so the pump will slide on smoothly. I thought I would just try and use the attachment bolts and force the pump on. I got scared that I would bend the aluminum housing on the pump so I backed out of that strategy. Its going on a '96 LT-4 and its a new delco pump. Any help would be greatly appreciated....

It should just slide right on, it is not keyed where you would have to line up the splines just right or anything.
You are right - don't use the bolts to force it on.

You could just turn the engine a smidgen using the crank bolt.

There are two o-rings that could cause binding. Be sure the splines are clean in the coupler. The o-rings will be on the shaft out of the timing cover and on the waterpump. Be sure you have them greased, and the coupler will slide on. I believe the groove on the coupler goes towards the engine. As 95vette stated there isn't an alignment spline.

The coupler has grooves that mate up with the drives on the cam and water pump. Last time I installed my water pump, I had to jog the engine a bit to get the pump to slide on freely. An alternative would be to use the coupler to turn the pump a little.

It's probably a random situation where the pump splines are hitting the coupler right between the grooves. When I first took my new pump out of the box, it slid right on.
