Hi guys.

Hopefully, this year I'll convert my '90 from auto to ZF6.
I did some research and I think that I understand
everything that I need. Only thing that I'm not sure of
are clutch components.

I have original clutch components but they need to be replaced.
So, I was wondering what parts should I get?
What is the best option price/quality related?

I would like to go with single mass flywheel. If I go with
single mass aftermarket flywheel, such as Fidanza, can I use
stock replacement clutch disc, TOB and pressure plate?

Are there some year specific things to look out for?

My car is '90 and ZF and all the parts that I have for
conversion are also from '90.

Is a '91-'96 starter a must? No way to reuse my starter?

you should be able to reuse the starter... the ZF came in 1989 and newer...

Clutch... follow along for a cheaper solution;

Stock Camaro/firebird flywheel, 1993-1995.
Cut the face down .090"
You must use a Camaro/Firebird compatible friction disc
Corvette pressure plate and throwout
Corvette friction disc

I highly recommend the NAPA brand hydraulic clutch hardware.

that's about it!

single. only the vette used the DMFW.

The cut down is so the FW will match up to the geometry of the ZF6 clutch.

It's a cheap way to go. It also weighs about half that of the DM, is easier to deal with than the aluminum.

The Fidenza is $400+ here, where the f-body can be gotten for as little at $80.00!!! Rock Auto has one at that price right now.

That sounds lika a god option.
Thank you for the infos.

Do you perhaps know if clutch disc and pressure plate
are the same diameter as on Vette?
Can they hold the same power/torque?

You use the Camaro friction disk and the Vette pressure plate.

You select power by the nature of the clutch kit in general. If you want a strong clutch, look at a McLood or something of that nature... if you are making power, an OEM organic will only hold about 450hp...

Hey, Bruno -

When you built the engine, was it internally balanced?

That will have a bearing on the clutch assembly.

Need a ZF? I have mine out of my '90 Z, 32K (converted to auto). Input shaft is different for L98 vs. LT5.

FSM should give specs for the shaft, in case a speed shop could turn it.

PM me if interested here...

edit:
Just re-read; that you already have the tranny...

Yes, engine was internally balanced. How does that affect
clutch assy?

A lot!

the LT1 and L98 were both internally balanced at the front and used the flexplate/flywheel for balance at the rear.

If the motor is internally balanced, then your flex plate is neutral balanced, and your new FW will need to be balanced the same way.

It's real hard to balance a flywheel on the motor.

OK, thank you very much for the infos.

If I understand correctly, I would have more problems
if the engine was externally balanced.
In my situation, flywheel can be neutral balanced separately?

Your starter should fit. The early vs late ministarters were clocked differently. I started with a late mini starter on my 85 conversion but switched to an early mini starter because the wire terminals reached my stock battery cable better.

One also hangs down lower than the other, I can't recall which , but that could present an issue if you have long tubes too close to the wiring harness or otherwise heating up the starter too much.

I have a pic but its on my home pc showing them side by side that would be helpful to have on here.

On '90, it's probably the lower one. I have constant
problems with starters heating up. It wasn't too much
of the problem until I installed Canton RR pan. With
that pan and LT headers surrounding the starter, too much
heat became an issue.

the headers but it didn't help a lot.

headers are best treated with a ceramic or jet hot type coating.

When I did my 89 Auto to ZF I reused the Factory starter.. so you should have no issues there

An idea... Any reason the 86-88 corvette replacement flywheel can't be used?

The stock clutch ass'y and bellhousing on my 2-pc rear 85 was used on the 1-pc rear 86+. And I'm running the ZF without issue using a stock replacement flywheel and the ZR1 clutch set to compensate for the flywheel protruding less into the bellhousing.

Now I'm careful to say replacement flywheel, and not OEM. The replacments are better than OEM because they have more material, which I think the weight helps with the unsprung clutch disc. Also the OEM doesn't have as large as a friction surface diameter. It is a hair too small to mate with the 11" clutch because they tried to save on cast iron where the 10.75" clutch didn't contact it.

My heavy solid cast iron flywheel with unsprung ZR1 clutch drives and engages perfectly. Better than stock. And no goofy dual mass setup. The only downside is gear clatter at idle, which I'm used to.
