OK, lots of dreaming here, but has anyone considered installing a 6L80 transmission in a C4? It has something like a 4.03 first gear. Again, just dreaming!!

good luck making it fit. Oh, even better luck finding a controller for it.

I would do a 4L80E conversion first... Or, TH400 with a Gear Vendors OD... better yet, 6sp manual.

Pete can do that - he might have done it already

Get him on the ZR1.net boards; username 'Pete'...

You'd wire in a dedicated controller module, either from TCI, or PCS.

Just had it done in the Z with a custom-built 4L60e.

The dimensions are not that different as far as length, the 6l80e is a bit thicker in overall girth. There are miscellaneous threads on the internet. I think the hardest part might be the controller, not sure how that works.

1984 to 1996 Corvette 4L80E Conversion Kit

Convert your C4 Corvette from a 700R4 / 4L60E to a much stronger 4L80E transmission. You get the Bionic 80 4L80E transmission (96 back) and the #80B lock-up billet torque converter rated at 800 horse power, 700R4 /4L60E to 4L80E conversion output shaft and tail housing, 4L80E cast aluminum dust cover, dipstick and tube, PATC T-shirt and the Compushift electronic control module. This 4L80E transmission will be the same length as your 700R4 / 4L60E transmission making it possible to reuse your existing 27 spline drive shaft and C-beam. This conversion kit is rated at 800 horse power. Each and every performance 4L80E transmission is tested in our test truck. The freight will run from free to $140.00 after freight discount in most cases. Option 1 Cost $5078.00

from everything I have read/heard, the urban legends at least seem to focus on the lack of a controller.

There seems to be some sort of vapour wear thing going on with a third party, or at the very least, generic controller for the transmission.

And even if you got the box, I am betting the controller will be another $1500. Them sucker's ain't cheap...

What got me to thinking about it is, I was reading about a C6 LS2 with a 3200 stall converter, 3.15 gear, and he said he had bolt ons only with the motor, and a tune. Said it was 400rwhp. But he said it runs 10.70's at 127mph. I know the C6 is probably lighter, but man, it sure does take a lot to push a C4 that fast.

C6 and C4 weigh about the same. The real advantage to the C6? the weight bias and the seriously better suspension, it really gets the power down.

Lessons learned in the C5R program were transferred into the C6, and then C6r results into later C6's and the C7. Real tech transfer, just like what Porsche and Ferrari do, has happened, and this is why the C5+ platforms are so much better than the C4.

The C4 was an improvement over the C3, for sure, but it was evolutionary. The C4 to C5 and then to C6 and C7 are proving to be revolutionary. Think of it this way, Ferrari test track, 355 to 360 to 430 to 458. Each car has improved 2 to 3 seconds a lap over the prior car. That's what I am talking about here.

The center of gravity is also lower on the C6, as is the polar moment of inertia, it's all much lower and much more contained than on the C4.

This is why a stock C6 will run over a 90-95 ZR1.
