Well some of my drag race buddies were over we checked everything several times. The group answer was that I need to up grade to a Performance chip with the 383 stroker. They say that the upgrade engine isn't getting what it needs from the stock chip.
Mat my friends from Famosa coppied the information from those links you gave me. They say the best simple examples of trouble shooting for a beginner or refresher for the pro. Thanks
I have never burned a chip and I am lacking knowledge to do so. It was suggested I purchase A performance chip stage 1 .

Worth it or not guys advice. Please
Steve

Regarding the chip, contact PCM4less and have them do a custom one. Around $200 but they will customize it for your mods. Do not get an off the shelf performance chip, or a "stage 1/2/3/4" whatever chip that some companies sell.

I thought you already had a chip in there, I didn't realize you were running a stock prom! Do you have a datalogging cable and software, etc?

No stock
"I thought you already had a chip in there, I didn't realize you were running a stock prom!"
Do you have a datalogging cable and software, etc? " No

That why I ask a lot of questions. Some times I ask the right ones. My buddies thought it was a no brainer to them

Thanks Mat will check out PCM4less.

Steve - you also need to get a datalogging cable to hook up to your laptop. That's about $60. I got mine from moates.net, or you can use aldlcable.com. You can download free tuning software such as datamaster tts or tunerpro. This way you can run scans of the car and email them to the tuner who will make fine adjustments and send you a new file or chip with the enhancements.

You will probably also need a zif adapter for the chip to plug it into your ecm, check with the tuner to see what he recommends. Mine is also from moates.net.

What Matt said, 100%.

The upside is that so many of these motors have been built up and the number of variances are limited, so PCMForLess can provide a chip for most every application needed.

I don't know of any specific problems working with win 7. As long as the comm port recognizes the cable, otherwise you have to download a free program to make the usb port pretend to be a comm port so the computer and cable with play nice. I have that info in an email somewhere I can dig out if you can't get it to work.

If you are trying to convert usb ports to serial COM ports, then I know there is a lot of adapters that don't work even if they claim to.

One that I have used with success on many computers is made by Keyspan.

I was really impressed with the products Moates.net has, particularly the ostrich that lets you flip between programs on the fly, but I never pulled the trigger. It essentially converts your hard chipped ECM prom into a flash/programmable unit. He sells all the cables you need to.

it's a steep learning curve, Steve... you will learn a lot, and feel ok with what you have, but when you talk to real engine tuners, you will still feel like an idiot.

These people are insanely knowledgeable about this stuff... and the entire concept is rather abstract.

Don't feel bad if you have issue grasping this stuff. It's not easy and does take years of exposure to get into a good comfort zone.

It has taken me a long time to get where I am with this stuff, and I know I am not even close to being "expert". I am in that grey area of "dangerous!"

That's why I don't offer much input on these threads. I let the pro's handle it...

Right in my learning curve then..

Looks like chance for someone to make a few bucks macking a basic guide.
Not me

This forum has a good section that explains and some how to's on data loging.
short example of help from this forum

TunerPro RT
Setting up the Driver

1.Download the driver and Install it.
2.After you install the drivers you will see two COM ports (in Device Manager). One port will be the Consult Port (USB Serial Converter A) while the other one is for the Emulator to upload Tunes (USB Serial Converter B).
You will be using the Converter A Port for Nissan Data Scan or any other Consult software. Actual tune modification will be done using Converter B. It's a good idea to make sure the COM ports are as low as possible (under 10).
This will help with compatibility with some ancient tuning software that doesn't like higher numbered COM ports.

Find the BIN for your specific ECU!!!
Nissan updated the tune and the firmware behind it with just about every year they released the car. This means you need to first find the stock base tune that was build for your specific ECU. Loading the bin from another ECU might work, but I've seen some serious issues too.

Steps for how to do that can be found here.

Loading Tune
1.Download and Install TunerPro RT.
2.Start up TunerPro RT, which should automatically detect your ECU.
3.Open up TunerPro RT, wait for it to load and nag screen go away. You can purchase the software to help you safe some time.
4.If you want to change the default settings of the program, you can do so at Tools, Preferences under the General Tab. I wouldn't worry about this one until later though.
5.First thing we want to do is open an Address file. Click on XDF, Select XDF.... Navigate and select the XDF that you would like to use.
6.Next step is to find a tune (ROM) that you want to modify. Click on File, Open Bin.... Navigate and select the BIN that you would like to tune.
7.Now we can start looking at items that we can tune.

Uploading the Bin
Uploading the tune is very simple:

1.In the toolbar look for an UP Arrow, should say "Upload Current Bin to Emulator"
CAUTION! Your Calum RealTime ecu allows you tune on while the car is running! There are some restrictions to this though, you can only upload changes to the BIN that is currently on the ECU. If you want to switch to a different BIN file, you must shut off the car first, by moving the key to OFF position.
2.Another way to do this is by going to Tools -> Emulation -> Upload Current Bin to Emulator

Downloading the Bin From ECU
Sometimes you might want to use the Bin that's currently on your ECU. Downloading the bin is as simple as uploading it.

1.In the toolbar look for an Down Arrow, should say "Download Bin from Emulator to TunerPro"
2.Another way to do this is by going to Tools -> Emulation -> Download Bin from Emulator to TunerPro
3.The bin will be now loaded into TunerPro, you can save it, or modify it and re-upload it

You can log before and after and save the files. You should do it driving, the tuner should have given you instructions: ie, baseline idle, pull from idle to 3000 rpm, etc. Ask the tuner.

I'm late to this thread, but here's some info that might help. Read thru this info on installing your new chip. Some folks do solder the new chip in, I don't suggest doing it. This adaptor works fine, I've been running my 89 with this set-up for 2-3years with no problems. Lots of folks here doing the same.

If the adapter is included then you are in business. Pop it in and rock n roll!
