When ever i exceed 18mph a rattling noise is heard from the (passenger side) right rear. As a increase my speed the noise gets louder most of the time. Strange thing is that when i make right turns and only right turns the noise goes away completely. I have checked the tire to see if it was out of round, but it was fine. I have also recently got new brakes and installed them. I measured the rotor with a micrometer and it was up to the specs. This is my first vet, so i do not know if this is normal. PLEASE HELP...THANKX. (The car is 1988 with 109,000miles )

I checked the U-joints and they seem to be fine. There isn't any
free play in the wheel-bearing. I talked to a gentleman who owns a camaro and he said that he had a similar problem. He stated it was his shock that was vibrating...? How do I know if it is coming from the shock ? |

I checked the U-joints and they seem to be fine. There isn't any I seriously doubt you'd get such a noise under the conditions you mentioned from a shock. And lack of discernible play in either U-joints or a wheel bearing would not necessarily rule either out as the cause. As Bogus said, those would be the first two places I'd check carefully. You may have to unbolt some things to check them more closely. With either, you can get noise before you get any slop. |

How do I know if it is coming from the shock ? With the wheel off you could grab it and give it a good shake and compare its flex to the other side. I humbly suggest that while you're poking around under there that you check the exhaust hangers. See if one side moves differently from the other. It was amazing to me when I discovered what I was sure was a bearing or u-joint grinding itself to death was just the last hanger's bolt loose. |

another source of clicking in the rear is rust... yes rust...
it gets between the splines of the stub axle and the inside of the wheel bearing. A quick test would be to spray some penetrating oil inside the stub axle and see what happens. I suggest PB Blaster. |
