free hydraulic pump for bleeding clutch systems?

Inspiration:

I'm going through the bleed proceedure for the clutch hydraulics. It occurs to me that if I had a little pump I could loosen the bleeder screw and push fluid up to the master and resivoir. Then it occurs to me that there is a hydraulic pump already there.

Ok so here's the idea:

Make up a hose and fitting that will allow one to remove the bleeder screw from the front left caliper to the clutch slave. Sit in the car and pump the brake to bleed the clutch.

What do you think?

Dot 4 can be used instead of and mixed with Dot 3. As mentioned above, Dot 4 is better than Dot 3.

This does not carry over to Dot 5!

But it does carry over to Dot 5.1

So mix Dot 3, 4, and 5.1 if needed but don't put Dot 5 into a system that has ABS or a system that once had Dot 3 or 4 in it.

I think the perfect place for Dot 5 is in show/museum cars that sit for years on end without being driven because Dot 5 will not absorb water,

BTW I know the FAQ says use synpower but I have always used castrol GTLMA.

I hope this isn't one of those religious type debates ala 160 degree 'stats but...

I'm asking. in total ignorance, why are the sealed prefered to the ones with the grease fittings?

Not at all. As I understand it, the 4L60 IS a renamed THM700.

It's a 4L60 and it's a TV cable. There is no vacuum connection for the trans. It's not controlled by the ECM and it is not electronic.

Model year 1994 was the first year of the 4L60e and that one is electronicly controlled and has no TV cable.

Search on Pete's trans tech tips for a wealth of knowledge on the 4L60.

I remember reading, on the CF (what's the right adjective? Outmoded, vestigial, legacy, etc?), that there was some concern over the material's interactions with aluminum. Alumiguard or some coating was not on the ones supplied by thepartsladi. Maybe call them or do some googling before you buy.

Search on "spicer" too.

Thanks, CC.

I should have asked which one to order before I ordered one. I went with the lifetime warranty one from Raybestos via Advance's website.

The slave is about a year old and is a delco.

The current master functions just fine but it shows rust and it's 15 years old this month so I'm changing it pre-emptively because I know it's plotting against the man. You know how teenage parts get they know nothing and everything at the same time.

All,
I've read through the FSM proceedure for R&R of the master cylinder and eyeballed it with the battery removed.

Can you think of any tips, tricks, or gotchas that I should know before I start?

FWIW I've done the slave before and found it fairly easy to do.

Thanks,
-Chris

One addition in the "Parts Sources" box could be the part number for replacement drain/fill plugs.

The GM part number is 10140673. They cost $10 to $20 each depending upon the dealer.

---
It seems the BMW aftermarket have made replacement plugs too that look like they will fit but I have no direct knowledge of them.

IMHO the perfect plug would be a male 17mm hex with a square machined into the center to receive a 1/4" drive tool. Then one could install them with the 1/4" ratchet and remove them with a 17mm box-end wrench.

I use the following entries in my hosts file to stop content from various spam sites from reaching my desktop. But I haven't found a good way to stop the annoying casalemedia popunders. The entry in my hosts file keeps their content away but does nothing to stop the flash that opens a window behind the one that has focus. Do you have a solution to popunders generated via flash?

Kent Moore offers tools for installing oil pressure gauges that screw onto the oil filter fitting and I think the oil filter then screws onto the tool just like some of the oil cooler mounts. Ebay prices are in the 10-20 dollar range.

With one of these you could then just screw in a bolt to block off the original hole and put your sensors on the oil-filter thing-a-ma-jig.

I agree that's the key if they are sealed they'll be fine. That's another thing though about inkjets that I don't like. If you don't use them often enough the cartridge will fail, not totally but you can figure on at least one smear per document.

I bought an off lease (used) NEC 21" display back in '99 from UBid for $169 landed. Now the thing won't power on. I use LCD's and laptops all the time and haven't seen the LCD display that was as clear as the NEC CRT was. I know that I have to move on and get with the times so I ordered a 24" LCD from Newegg.

Score this round for inovation but I will never part with my IBM PS/2 101 Keyboard with the classic mechanical click ala the Selectric typewriters. (It does drive my wife crazy when I'm typing a lot while she is in the room.)

Computers come and go. My camera came with a memory card that had more memory than my first several computers combined. But there is something about displays and keyboards that I bond with and don't like to change. If the human interface isn't just so I don't care how fast a computer is I won't like it.

I'd rather give up color and go with a laser printer than buy an ink-jet based solution.

So were it me, I'd opt for an HP laser all in one and forget about photo printing in house (using Kinkos or SAMS for photos when needed). Or maybe buy a dedicated photo printer if I really wanted one.

Have you ever tried the Kinko's print online service?

I've done that trick with the soap before but only scratching bar soap up under my finger nails.

I used barrier cream before too and it works but so does any hand/skin cream if I work it into my skin before hand.

Go-Jo with pumice is what I use for clean up afterwards though.

If you want to let me know when you are going to be pulling codes, I'll try to make sure that both the car and FSM are near by. Or if you post any codes found here I'll snap a pic of the maps that go with the code for you and post them. Just let me know.

The less obvious reason for using standard English in a technical forum is the benefit it will have on future searches. Teh(sic) l33t dood speak may have been funny years ago but the time, if it existed, has passed. It sounds about as hip as CB lingo did 10 years after "Breaker Breaker" and "Smokey and the Bandit".

I know Corvettes were exported in only small numbers but there are international users that rely upon bablefish et al for searching too.

I say well done, Smack.

My first car was a '76 Gran Prix. I didn't know how to wrench anything at the time and had a shop replace the starter. On my way home from picking up my car I stopped at a store and when I went to start the car, it caught fire. (Turns out the "hot" wire was installed touching the block and its insulation burned.) I saw a cop standing by his patrol car so I ran to him and asked "Do you have a fire extinguisher?" He said "no". I read his badge number out loud and ran into a drug store, grabbed a fire extinguisher off the shelf and ran out with it shouting that I would be right back to pay for it. The clerk said "Fine GO!" When I got back to my car the cop had put it out with his fire extinguisher. I went back inside and bought the one I had briefly stolen. I've never needed one since then but have thought it would be a good idea to buy another one just for the garage area. The only one I have now is in the kitchen opposite the gas cook top.

Good job with the hose, oil or not

CF doesn't want C4 owners anyway.

I don't understand why but the general sections of that site are filled with people, many that don't even own a Corvette, bashing the C4 owners.

There was a small window of time before the C5's shipped just after I bought my car. I never felt superior to those people that owned older Corvettes and I certainly didn't insult them. Back then, there was no CF. The online community was really the alt.autos.corvette newsgroup. With only one or two trolls as exceptions it was a place where owners could share expiriences. But that is what I remember most about the first few years that I had my car, the community. I remember dyno/mod events and spur of the moment dinners out etc. The guys who showed up with 1974's in primer were as welcomed as the ZR1s sporting all the Zaino and Mother's polish.

I think the C5 brought in a group of people that never before considered owning a Corvette and weren't "car guys". Maybe I'm just getting older. Maybe it's just a sign of the times. But it sure seems like that close knit feeling is gone. I won't say that I'm never going back to CF for anything but I just took it off my "favorites".

Unless some transmission-fairy-god-mother gave me one of the Williams-Renault CVTs from the mid 90's I think I'd just want another ZF to go in were mine to fail. I know some complain about how it shifts and even about the amount of pressure required to operate the clutch but I like it just fine.

I didn't see anyone mention the Firestone Firehawks so I will toss them into the mix.

IMHO they are grippy and quiet compared to the Kuhmo and the BFG's that I've had. I didn't run the BFG's in the rain and didn't keep them long when I bought the car. I don't drive like it's dry when it's wet like many people I see on the road so I think any tire would be ok for me in that regard. I do feel better in the wet with the Firestones than I did with the Kuhmos.

YMMV tax tag title dealer prep fees and floormats extra.

Ok so let's try a few easy numbers to see if we have an issue or not.

Suppose we have a gasoline powered car that get 20 MPG. That's very realistic I think. It would produce a gallon of water for every 20 miles traveled. So if one were to scatter the ice crystals from one gallon of gas over a 20 mile track could that cause any safety problems? I don't think so.

I understand that to produce the same power one needs to consume about four times as much hydrogen gas as gasoline liquid by volume.

Let's not use the 4:1 ratio. Let's go to the extreme.

Suppose we have a hydrogen powered car that gets only 1/20th the MPG of the gas car. That would mean putting out a gallon of water every mile. So would it be a hazard if the ice crystals from a gallon of water were uniformly distributed over a 1 mile strip? Again, I don't think so.

This is totally off the cuff so please poke holes in my reasoning.

Gasoline powered cars also produce water and in the right weather conditions it will stream out of the exhaust and puddle too. Has this been a problem for those in northern climes already? If not, I don't think it will be any new problem with hydrogen power. Anytime any organic compound is burned, CO2 and water will be byproducts.

I learned long ago that I would never understand fashion cycles. When I was a teen my peers would go out in public wearing plastic clothes that only the strangest of the break dancers would wear. The next crazy was PHC stuff that looked like pajamas. I looked at the websites for the usual suspects that make head units. I really don't understand why there aren't more 1.5 and 2 din models but that aside I don't know why every head unit has to look like the lighting system from a SF bay area disco circa 1977. I like the look of the factory radio. Even Mcintosh has spiced up their faceplates a bit. Do you know of any head units that I might like? Maybe a full on car PC would do the trick since I could set the screen up however I want, LOL cat photos no doubt.

Maybe after the flu/cold is gone it'll be time to look into low/no impact bicycling or swimming?

Before I got two little low profile jacks, I would drive onto four wood blocks to allow my big jack under the car. I used 2x10's and cut them to 12".

BTW I don't ever crawl under a car supported only with jacks but I do raise one side of the car with my little jacks, place stands at key points and rotate the tires front to back while the weight of the car is still on the jacks. I know it isn't following the rules according to Hoyle but it's easier than transfering the weight to the stands. Anyone else cheat?

I've seen these on trucks but not on a Corvette yet. You could be the new trend setter!

Check out this video. I don't speak German but I do sense that they are more appreciative than Jeremy Clarkson.

The timing chain keeps the crankshaft indexed to the camshaft so that the valves open and close in time with the pistons' travel.

Timing sets consist of a crankshaft gear, a camshaft gear that's twice as big, and a chain that connects them.

Timing sets do wear out and they do fail and when they do they can cause enough damage that a rebuild is needed. The chains are strong but the rollers develop flat spots. The gears' teeth become scalloped and can break. Also, GM made several engines with timing gears that were steel coated with some plastic that was supposed to reduce the noise from the timing set. That plastic stuff can break off and collect in the bottom of the timing cover.

On interference engines, engines where the pistons' travel and the valves' travel overlap, a broken timing set can cause contact between the top of the piston and the bottom of the valve. That contact can break things and send metal shards that cause additional damage.

I had an Olds that failed when the camshaft gear broke off of the camshaft. I had a Jeep that didn't quite fail but ran rough until I replaced the timing set's plastic coated gears and tensioner.

Evaporator emission pressure control valve to keep the tank from going poof in the desert while keeping vapor in to save the drowning polar bears?

If you're seeing sparks in a dark engine bay, I would suspect the ignition wires before I would suspect the opti. Either way, digging in to it will show you where the fault lies.

Let us know what you find, please.
