I've come across a problem with installing an aftermarket cam in my 305 small block chevy. My manual says to intall the sprockets so the dots are at the 12 o'clock position and centerlined with the crank and cam. I seem to remember that the sprockets were installed with the cam sprocket at 6 o'clock and the crank sprocket at 12 o'clock. Which is correct?

It would be the same but it's much easier to do it with the cam at 6 and the crank at 12. Your crank makes two rotations to one of the cam so if you were to do it with both marks at 12 then rotate the engine one crank revolution it would line up at 6-12.

The crank does two full rotations to the cam's one full rotation resulting in no difference if it is at 12:00 or 6:00. Either way.

Like he said, it's just easier to line them up at 12:00 and 6:00.

Line them up on six and twelve and align the distributor to the #6 firing position instead of #1, that's all you have to remember.
