bogus IKEA and me...

Bastet and I bought a couple of IKEA waredrobes this week... they arrived last nite and we proceeded to assemble.

I love IKEA stuff, it's cheap, rather durable and easy to assemble... just don't bother with this big stuff unless you have a TON of space!!! The structure was a joke, as soon as you went to lift it, the thing started to come apart!!!! Man, I was pissed. I ended up screwing it together the old fashioned way. Now it's strong as an ox.

If we had the space, we could have finished all assembly on the floor, fine and dandy, but if you don't, extra care must be taken to keep it from coming undone, and even then, I am not 100% sure it's all that perfect. They suggest a vertical assembly if you can't tilt it, but that is a pain, too, because of all the bit that have to be held together.

All in all a very clumsy experience, one I cannot blame IKEA for, per se, but one that could have gone much smoother.

IKEA Computer Desk.
$75.00.
CPU is under the drawer on the RH side.
Includes a white board on the upper RH sie. Can't see it, but the top has book ends for book storage.

Also have one for my son's computer that we paid $35.00 for.
It's just a movable (casters) desk with a keyboard tray, and shelf for the cpu.

So what youre saying is you butchered it?

have a computer desk similar to the pic, has to come apart to be moved or it will flex itself into pieces as Bogus said.

not really. I am surprised how unbutchered it looks.

Sure, I drove a few long screws into it, but they are not ungainly.

In short? I hate partical board. It's heavy and it's weak. The only way it can be strong is to drill through it and put bolts on with big washer. As a material, it has not fiber strength like wood, or even OSB, has.

I guess it is a good use of resources, tho... recycling bits and such.

Ikea furniture reminds me of those artpieces we used to make in elementary school with toothpicks and popsicle sticks. At least its made of real wood I guess.

Not really. It's plastic laminate glued to the flimmsiest of very weakly compacted particle board. The laminate is the thinnist stuff I've ever seen glued to boards also. It like writing paper thickness (about .005") I actually put a hole in the top of my desk with a pencil eraser.

This stuff is light, but looks heavy/massive.
Very deceiving. But for the cost, I like it for the 3-5 years I'll have it (Then, it's burn barrel time)

The major good point to it is instead of the 1/2 to 3/4" thick stuff you get from Sauder (made in the USA), the IKEA stuff is 1-1/4" thick.
