[1985/A4/very stock]

Following a couple of troubleshooting diagrams in the Helms lead to the distributer.

I know nothing beyond the absolute basics about distributers.

Here's the question:

are there wear items in the distributer assembly other than the distributer cap (it's original and NCRS judged) that would be reasonable to replace?

Cap, rotor, coil, and ignition module are standard replacement items. The cap and rotor are the only things that really wear though.

The rest should last the life of the car.

As for your NCRS, the replacement coil covers and maybe the caps too are different than your original, they have 3 screws vs 2.

That's what I was thinking - is it psychotic just to replace the rotor?

Doesn't hurt. Try cleaning up the terminals under the cap at the very least with a wire brush or pencil eraser if you're going to reuse it.

The gear on the bottom of the distributor can fail.

Shaft bushings used to be replaceable but I don't know if they still are as in your case. Probably just have to replace the distributor if the shaft gets too sloppy now. I used to replace bushings frequently though on older points type and even some earlier electronic distributors.

Well, I guess the engine block could split in half too...
