I just replaced the fuel sending unit, still have an always empty fuel guage; the cluster is good, all bars light up at start -- I did have some trouble getting the unit into the tank, is it possible something is binding or broken?

Also odd is that sometimes (no regular pattern) the fuel guage will go up to 3 or 4 bars, stay there for a while, then go back to zero/reserve...

One of these days I hope to be able to just get in and drive her! Thanks all...

if you just replaced the sending unit, my money would be on a wiring issue somewhere.

But I'm honestly at a loss.

I had a similar problem. This is a flimsy sender and if you had trouble getting it back in you may have bent the contact or it fell apart. Mine started doing just like you said and it had just fell apart. Reassembled and put back in. Been working ever since.

That's kind of what I was thinking, it was not easy for me to get it back in; is it supposed to drop straight in without twisting? If so it really scraped the sides of the opening...

Also if the float arm portion is damaged or broken, is that available as a separate part from the rest of the unit?

Last thing, I used a new gasket when I put this unit in, since it's hasn't been long it should be OK to reuse this practically new gasket, no?

Thanks again all!

I'd say youd be fine reusing the gasket
