Hey guys,
Next week I will be installing a light package (my new occupation for next week) in a 2007 Dodge Charger RT. The guy whose car it is asked if I could make a couple of tweaks to the system. I know what I need to do, what I don't know is what type of diode I need. Basically, I will need to isolate the rear brake lights, and the front turn signals. I will be energizing the turn singles using a relay and flasher so they blink when they lights are on, that is WITHOUT HAVING THE 4 Ways on (so basically only the front turn signals will blink) he has wig wags for the back. I found a couple of diodes in my box, but they are 6v low amp diodes... so basically they will be cutting the power of the lights down in half. All I need to do is block the flow of electrical current in one direction, but allow all the normal amount of current to flow in the other direction. I don't want to induce resistance. Anybody have an idea of what I am looking for and where I can get it? Dan |

Why not just isolate the circuit and run a 12V relay instead?

Well then I would have to run 2 relays.

Central,... is this kind of your idea?

This is my idea... I can run 1 relay, and 1 flasher. All i need to do is Isolate the lights. If I don't, when I turn any of the turn signals on normally, the current will run up the aftermarket flasher wires and turn the other signal on, which is what I need to prevent |

Either sketch will work, although obviously the relays would be powered on the same wire and switched on the same wire. I really haven't used diodes, but I suspect they'd be more reliable.
Do you basically only use relays when you're changing the polarity of the switch source, or going from low to high current? For that matter, do you need any relays at all? Most cars don't use relays in the lighting circuits. |

As far as I know you can basically use relays for both. I primarily use them to control high current with low current. I has an electrical fire in my Chevelle about 7-8 years ago. I shouldn't have been wiring at all. This was pre-college, and before I had any experience what so ever. Since then I have anyways been anal about using the correct fuses, and when I wire anything I use a larger gauge wire than necessary. (And never speaker wire... unless I am wiring speakers)
Since I will be running, about 20 led strobes, a scanner, some sort of radio, wig-wags front and rear, a dash light, light bars, and fog flashers to 2 switches (front and rear), everything must be on a relay! DG |

So,... judging by the second diagram we know I need some sort of diode..... WHICH ONE AND WHERE DO I GET IT?

Radio Shack has 3a and 6a barrel diodes that should do the trick.
I would think a 3a 20v would be more than big enough. |

Hy-Power diodes. Used them on my Jeep when wiring for towing.
