I've never heard of the Profiler heads, but I'll take a look at them. After all, they're only about a half hour from the house. I was looking at their site. If they flow 308, I'll bet it's not in the 185's. They don't have any flow charts that I could see, but it'd be interesting to know how they got 308 out of any of their heads. They only go up to 210cc intake.

I'm looking at these, but again, they have the 62cc chambers. I looked on the ProComp site and their 59cc heads are 205cc intake runners.

Dart and RHS both offer chambers down to 49cc. These heads are a special order and are desgined for limited oval track class cars that have to run flat top pistons.

What kind of pistons do you have now and what kind of compession ratio are you shooting for?

Depending on the pistons, 64cc chamber with the right head gasket could give you plenty.

I currently have the stock '88 L98 pistons.
Admittedly, I'm not an authority on engine building, but with alum heads I'm not aware of being able to go below about .026-.029 (compressed) on head gaskets. Unless you guys can offer some ideas, I'm not too certain on how to approach this. It wouldn't bother me too much on a carbed engine to mill the heads. W/ a carbed intake when you mill the heads, you mill the intake. Those intakes can often be replaced for under $100 off CL or fleabay. But the Accel or other aftermarket TPI bases are pretty costly to just start milling on.

Which brand? They all seem to avoid anything under 62cc.

As far as the importance of compression, it's already low enough, why make it worse? If I could, I'd use a larger chamber, I would.

How come all the companies that make cylinder heads can't come up with a 180cc intake head that has 58cc combustion chambers? They're the ones making them, why can't they make a 58cc head? I know for as an,"as cast" head this would mean a new set of casting patterns, but if they're gonna sell a set that's hogged out by cnc'ing them, why not start out with around a 55cc chamber as cast, and mill it to cnc specs. Then the financially challenged dopes like me might feel better about buying a set of heads if I know I can bolt the "as cast" heads on and maybe even get a raise in compression. I was looking at AFR's website and their specs on the 180's referred to the L98 heads in several spots. That tells me they know L98 guys are looking to buy these. So why not sell something that can be bolted on without having to mill the crap out of the heads AND the intake to get things to line up? Does this not make sense? This has been probably the biggest stumbling block to me actually buying a set of heads even more than cost. Why do I want to spend over $1500 just to start milling on them AND my intake to "make" them work?

I'm done bitching now. You can go back to your lives.
And by the way Andy, I'm sorry, but I'm still not getting Email notifications from the Guru.

Well it looks like I'm on my way with it. I just sent my money order off to Fatt Vatte on the other forum for a new and uninstalled hotcam. I just missed a set of rockers on the local Craigslist, maybe next time.

Any suggestions on a set of springs? I don't know for sure what size the L98 has, or what I'm gonna need. Also, am I gonna need new pushrods?

Bob - although a dyno tune is great, it is pricey and a mail order tune should suit you just fine, should you choose to go that route.

Well, if I go with a mail order tune, I'd like to go with one that's a tried and true deal for the SR with ported 113's and a specific cam. In other words I'd like to get as much of a plug and play setup as I can. I know alot of guys like this or that setup, but I really just want to get a good running setup. That's why I'm willing to look at a set of SLP's or other LTR's again. I no longer feel like I need to have the baddest boy on the block or the coolest/latest deal on the web. If that was the case I'd go all out like Rick(88blackZ51) did. Now there's a heckuva build!

So if you guys know of a build like I'm thinking of, I'm all ears.

I posted this on that other forum, but I also wanted to know what you guys think as well.

I'm probably going to pull my heads off for porting later this year. When I put them back on I'd like to use a good head gasket that's going to last like my OEM's have but I'm hoping to use a gasket that'll have a thinner compressed thickness as well so's I can increase my compression a bit. And yes, I'm planning to use new head bolts.

I'm afraid a dyno tune in Ohio is something that's nearly unheard of. As far as I know, the option doesn't exist anywhere within 200 miles of Dayton. It can be done if you have an LSx, but no one I know of does the L98 chip.

Thanks for the input Greg, there's some things to think about in there. Fwiw, I was all over the TPS and IAC last year, but I can always check them again.

I'm aware of mrc24x's car. I spoke with him on the phone a few years ago about his setup. That's one reason I've been considering going back to LTRs instead of the SR.

As for the vacuum leak, that's possible. It's been ten years since I put the SR base on, and with the minor heat situation I had on the way to storage last fall, that may just be the end of that gasket's seal. We'll have to see how things play out after I get it out of storage.

As for the WOT lean condition possibilities, I'm leaning toward a better set of stock replacement injectors. That coupled with the fact that the stock chip, by my understanding, tends to run rich at WOT for the stock engine along with the better injectors, should come relatively close to what I'm going to need.

Bob,

Why would you want to take off the SR? Seems like going backwards to me.

It's not yet a firm decision to get away from the SR. If I get into a build, it's not gonna be a superbad setup. That's why I'm gonna port my 113's instead of getting new heads. That's also another reason I don't wanna get into a bunch of tuning issues.

I can't say it's for sure, but I think my SR's big ol' plenum may be why I'm having stall out problems when I let off the gas. The way I look at it is this; when I let off the pedal, the TB closes, but I've still got that big plenum full of air to run thru the engine, but since the throttle blades are shut, it's not gonna send near enough gas to compensate for all the air in the plenum. The engine is much more able to create a vacuum in stock sized plenums, or those closer to stock, than those that are the size of my SR.
Believe me, you don't know exitement like suddenly finding yourself on an exit ramp and the power brakes don't work because your engine stalled when you let off the gas.

BTW, I'll try to put up a pic of the SR. It's stock and unported, just painted. I've also got two tops for it. The Accel cast, and a custom made billet that's in the pic

Thanks for the info on the u-joints. I'll give them a good look.

I hadn't considered the radiator. That's a pretty good call on that. I was only going on previous experience along with the fact that I didn't hear the fans running as I backed it into position for storage, and that's when I smelled the antifreeze. Combined with the overheating on the way there, I guess I just assumed it was the intake. Remember the saying,"There's two kinds of TPI bases. The ones that leak, and the ones that are going to leak."

My car's only just turned 28,000 miles, so I think my cam bearings are ok. Here's the rest of my mods according to my CF sig...

Red/Red '88 'Vette, Glass top only, 4+3, Bose, Z51 w/ ZR-1 Rims. SR base/plenum, TPIS afpr, Air box, wires and pulleys, no screens, Flowmaster cat-back. Tri-Y Headers thru hi-flow cat, always MOBIL1.

I don't think that the hotcam would be a bad choice for what you are saying. You will have to change your springs in the heads.

Of course, a chip will help you optimize any mods you do, but that's your choice. I think you are right that the chip is forgiving, and the MAF is said to accept small changes more easily.

Thanks for bringing up the springs. I'm figuring injectors as well. I would probably just get the whole hotcam kit, unless it'd be better to source things otherwise. A couple years ago I had some pm's and then a phone conversation with mrc24x over on the other forum. He'd set up a racer using his stock chip. (He's since gone to an aftermarket chip to get as much as he can out of the setup.) He drove the car in traffic and said it did well on all fronts. It should be noted though that he was using Accel cast runners and TPIS ported 113 heads.

While writing this it came to me that I'm not so set on a setup that's the baddest thing around as much as I want something that's a somewhat proven setup. So if you guys know of a cam, intake, ported 113 head setup that works really well with a specific chip, I'd certainly be willing to give that a good hard look as well.

(I'm posting this here since I'm not actually working on the car at this time and it's all just stuff I'm thinking about doing, but haven't made the actual start on the project.)

Here in the next month or so I expect my KWIKLIFT to be delivered. Once it's here I'm gonna start a little work on the Vette. I'm prolly gonna put in some new heavier U-jionts as the old ones are OEM. Also, I blasted an inner Ujoint on my '68, and believe me, it "tweren't" pretty. So it's mostly for the peace of mind that I'm looking to swap to more stout Ujoints.

Also, and more importantly, when I put it into storage last fall, it was overheating on the way there, and I smelled antfreeze when I parked it. So I guess I'm gonna pick up a fan relay and bring it home for the manifold gasket job.

I can't find the post I made last year, but I was having trouble with stalling after letting up on the throttle, sometimes in traffic, causing me to lose vacuum to the power brakes. So I'm thinking if it has a watery vacuum leak, this MAY have something to do with it. Hopefullly a new set of gaskets will go a good ways toward fixing this.

But now, I'm also looking at having a little more fun. Since i'm gonna have the SR off for gaskets anyway, maybe I might go crazy and do a little self porting on the heads, and get a good valve job while I'm at it. And while it's apart, I'm looking at MAYBE doing a cam swap.
The biggest thing I want to do is use something that'll run with the stock chip.

That's right, I said the stock chip. I just seems to me that the stock chip can handle more than the stock setup. I might need to go back to long tube runners and sell the SR, but I think it'll do it. Besides, from what i've read and been able to pickup, I'm just too far into the classification of "Compu-Dope" to have anything but years of frustration when it comes to messing with the chip. I've been reading up on some publications that have run the stock chip with some cams that go beyond the GM "Hotcam", and they seem to run well.
Of course, I'd rather stay with the SR since thats the intake I have on there now, but I might be convinced to go back to either the ASM runners, or the Edelbrock or SLP setups.

Besides calling me crazy, what do you guys think? Should I try the ZZ4 cam, the Hotcam, or maybe another selection from Comp?

It sounds like you guys have everything well in hand. I'm taking two whole days off this weekend to let my knee rest up from the workweek. It's the left one and has some cartilage damage and now arthritis. I haven't had much time for posting this week so I'll catch up by saying I'm back to being a one toy guy again. Last week I sold off the Chevelle and I'm gonna bring the Vette home in a couple months. In the mean time, last Monday , I finally ordered a Kwiklift, and I'm still looking at OBD 1&2 diagnostic stuff. I'm thinking I'll prolly go with the Innova 3140.

My reason for going w/ a Kwiklift is I've only got a 9' ceiling in the garage and less with the door up. By the time I put the Suburban on there, That won't leave much room, so why buy anything that can go much higher and be a damage problem waiting to happen?

Automotively, The Y2K Impala has developed an antifreeze smell in the cabin, and last week after sitting in traffic for a good while, it puked coolant on the driveway by its rf tire. I have a feeling I'm gonna be pulling the heatercore for sure, and maybe getting the radiator cleaned out as well. It's got 112,000 miles. We bought it 4 years ago and I don't think it had the best of care before we got it. Just for curiosity, I went to the dealership and he quoted me, get this, $900 to put in a heatercore. He then added, it's more likely the lower intake gasket which is closer to 1300 bux! I get the feeling that when I wear a Univ of Cincinnati hat, most people see that as reading, "STOOPID". Now I know why I do my own work. Btw, I did the lower intake a couple years ago, no probs since.

So now I'm off to enjoy a lazy azz day and ponder the meaning of life.
You guys have a great one.

That's a valid question, but yes, I have been clicking the "Remember Me." As a matter of fact, I had to login again to post this reply.

I didn't need to login everytime before the update last week. Is there something of a glitch, or is it a security deal, or.........?

Bill, Thanks for the video. That's helpful.

Andy, you might be right about Sears, but they're owned by Kmart. As you suggest, they may have a questionable future.

I've always liked Actron as well. As a matter of fact, I still have an Actron Dwell/Tach I bought in 1972(?) and it still works great. At least I don't have to have one tomorrow, so I still have time to research this.

BTW, I'm not limiting my choices to the two in my opener, those were the only ones I knew of at the time. I'm more than willing to look at others as well.

WOW!!!!

I never anticipated such a set of responses!!!

Since the opening post, we bought a car. BTW, the cost came from grandparents money, so the choice was basically hers. Wife and I just set limits on cost. Now, to announce the purchase..........(drum roll).........

We got a 2010 Impala w/ 24k miles, GM certified for 14k out the door. Personally, I think we did pretty good. Silver, black interior, alloy wheels, remote start. We pick it up in the AM.

Sorry for the drama, just a little pre-Christmas depression.

My topic was a question.
What started it for you guys with Vettes? Even tho my 1st was a '68 roadster, for me it's a baddass mid-year roadster with a bigblock and a bunch of cam. I can remember being a kid in the late 60's/ early 70's and seeing guys build up any muscle they could afford, but it was the Vettes that got me. The look of the Mid-year cars along with a thumping bigblock was just what the Dr. ordered.
Who's next?

It's interesting that my original topic was ignored by all who viewed it, but now that I've tried to delete my own post, nothing but incorect assumptions.

So is my 17 yr old.....do they have organized teams or is it just get a bunch of guys choose up and go at it....? If you had all the gear and the high end weapons you could spend some bucks.....

My son and his friends have some teams they play on. From what I've seen it doesn't take too much other than common sense safety gear to have a real blast with it, and there's no paint to wash out when you're done.

I recieved this in an email, but you know how that stuff goes. I'm just wondering if it really is true.

ON JANUARY 1st 2012, THE GOVERNMENT IS REQUIRING EVERYONE TO HAVE DIRECT DEPOSIT FOR SS CHECKS. WONDER WHY? 1% tax on all bank transactions HR4646

Watch for this AFTER November elections; remember this BEFORE you VOTE in case you think Obama's looking out for your best interest.

1% tax on all bank transactions HR 4646
This government just cannot think of enough ways to hurt the American people!

FORWARD THIS TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW!
1% tax on all bank transactions HR 4646- ANOTHER NEW OBAMA TAX SLIPPED IN WHILE WE WERE A SLEEP. Checked this on snopes, it's true! Check out HR 4646.

President Obama's finance team is recommending a one percent (1%) transaction fee (T A X). Obama's plan is to sneak it in after the November elections to keep it under the radar.

This is a 1% tax on all transactions at any financial institution -
banks, credit unions, savings and loans, etc. Any deposit you make, or even a transfer within your account, will have a 1% tax charged.

~If your paycheck or your social security or whatever is direct deposit, it will get a 1% tax charged for the transaction.

~If your paycheck is $1000, then you will pay Obama $10 just for the privilege of depositing your paycheck in your bank. Even if you hand carry your paycheck or any check into your bank for a deposit, 1% tax will be charged.

~You receive a $5,000 stock dividend from your broker, Obama takes $50 just to allow you to deposit that check in the bank..

~If you take $1,000 cash to deposit at your bank, 1% tax will be charged. Mind you, this is from the man who promised that, if you make under $250,000 per year, you will not see one penny of new tax. Keep your eyes and ears open, you will be amazed at what you learn about this guy's under-the-table moves to increase the number of ways you are taxed.
Oh, and by the way, if you receive a refund from the IRS next year and you have it direct deposited or you walk in to deposit that check, you guessed it. You will pay a 1% charge of that money just for putting it in your bank. Remember, any money, cash, check or whatever, no matter where it came from, you will pay a 1% fee if you put it in the bank.

Some will say, oh well, it's just 1%. Are you kidding me? It's a 1%
tax increase across the board. Remember, once the tax is there, they can also raise it at will. And if anyone protests, they will just say, "Oh, that's not really a tax, it's a user fee"! Think this is no big deal? Go back and look at the transactions you made on one year's banking statements. Then add the total of all those transactions and deduct 1%. Still think it's no big deal?

I didn't know they were getting so worried about this. From what I saw, it's 35 bux for one time carfax. Dealers can get it for 15. Local dealer said they'd do it for the 15. They don't subscribe as it's so inconsistant that they only have it for the customers that insist on it. I know it's a VERY fallable report, but you never know what might show up. I think I'm gonna rent some rack time and give the Pacifica a good look and go from there.
