Not sure about that. State Farm allowed me to set the replacement price of my car. I named the number, $10k, they agreed. Now if I told them $20k, might have been an issue.

I think what you have to do, if you carry full coverage on your Vette is to insure it on an agreed value. Most companies will allow this for an older car. Your rates will reflect this agreed value, and they won't go for crazy valuations like $1,000,000.

I read somewhere where a guy bought his first Vette based on that magazine's valuations. He got hosed and was

If someone will give me $10.4k for my 87, as much effort as I've put into it, I'd sell it yesterday for that.

But I don't see whats so bad about a 30 yr fixed in this market.

I'm very conservative, so take anything I say in that context. Fixed is the only way to go if you can do it. 30 year is poison. What I did, was finance 30 year fixed, because the difference at the time was 1/4%. So I have a 30 year mortage at 5.75%. Now, paying it for 30 years would be stupid. Like redwing said, you pay the house price to the lender in 10 years, and then line their pockets the last 20. So, I pay extra. Taking random numbers, if my payment is $800/month, and I pay $1000/month, I pay that loan off in 18 years. Go here:
http://www.hughchou.org/calc/missing.cgi
Plug in numbers and see what happens.
Buying real estate will make you money, but it's also a second job. Renters and repairs are a serious headache.

The best way to think of it is, once you take on a debt, you have to pay it back. If your debt is at 6%, every dollar you owe is going to keep growing the debt at 6%. Every dollar extra you put against that loan will keep it from growing interest debt at 6%, thus EARNING you 6%. So, if you put $100 extra against a debt that you owe 6% for 20 years, it's like investing $100 in a fund that will return 6% for 20 years.

It's a good idea to put money against the 8.5% debt.
Think of it this way, the money used to pay the 8.5% debt is earning 8.5% for you. Finding an 8.5% return today is a tough task.

I'm not experienced with those mixed loans you folks in California pioneered. So I don't know how the 2% and 8.5% thing works, but if you can put money against the 8.5% debt do it. As for the 2%... you have to pay it sooner or later, not sure I'd worry about putting extra against that.

If it's that same jack as the one in that thread over on CF that pianoguy linked to, it's a 3.5 TON jack. That's 7000 lbs. The Vette is about 3200 - 3400 lbs depending on year and options.

I tend to agree. I think the C4 is much prettier. I just can't get away from newer, and faster. Both are good things. And it is still a Corvette.

It is the nature of things. C4 owners cry that the car they paid $12k for is only worth $9k now. Big hit percentage-wise, but in total dollars, not near what the C5 owners are seeing, and will see. A base C6 is $45k. As the price of used C6s fall, the C5s are going to head for C4 price territory. Bad news for C4 owners is, unless you have something very special, your car is going to fall even more, until the numbers are thinned out.

If my car is worth $6k, but I can buy a mid mileage '01 for $15k, I don't see any damage there.

BTW, what is it with some of the C4 owners? I see ordinary, low mileage, late model C4s offered for $17k - $20k. Are they on drugs? There's a guy that's trying to sell a great quality 88 vert for $30k?! I'd like to visit their world, sell my 87, and then come back to the real world and use that money to buy a C5.

I'm not an expert, but I have come to know they call that a FRC - Fixed Roof Coupe. They decided to do that for the high performance cars, to eliminate the chance of body flex. My 87, when the top is off, doesn't feel real sturdy. If I keep it long enough, I'll put an X brace on it.

C5 prices are falling. I wouldn't be surprised if one day I sell the 87 and get a C5.

My wife's Voyager has a coolant leak.
It's a 3.3L V6. The shop we take it to, told me it's a leak around the timing cover. That doesn't make sense to me. The timing cover has something to do with coolant flow?

Can anyone here confirm or correct that diagnosis?

The end of this month will mark one year for me.
I truely enjoyed the "hunt" looking for my C4.
The car is much better than I found her, and will get even better in the next couple years, God willing.

There is another option. I haven't seen your kitchen, but it's possible to freshen a room without totally gutting it. Floor, countertop, maybe some new lighting, reface or paint the cabinets. Since you definately won't be there for the long haul, half stepping is totally acceptable.

Thanks. Don't misunderstand. I'm not unhappy with the Kumhos, heck, I haven't even run them yet. They look nice enough. Tirerack rated them 17 out of 44 performance tires, so it seems they are good bang for the buck.
My bias is that experience tells me you get what you pay for. So, they may not be as good as the Vredestiens, but they should suit my purpose just fine!

You just have to be tough to deal with snow, (or stupid).
It's going to get warmer this weekend, hoping I can run the Vette a little bit. And yes, it is a nice update, makes the car look newer. I think those 84-87 wheels are about the ugliest wheels I've ever seen.

Did they come with the Corvette emblems? I thought most aftermarket wheels didn't have corvette emblems on them. One of my next purchases is going to be wheels just like yours!

Came as you see, with the C4 center caps, direct bolt on for 84-87. AFS is easy to deal with, and I think I got a great deal. I got wheels and tires, lugs and locks, shipped to my door for $970. I got the Kumho tires. They're not the best, but they aren't bad either. When the snow clears, I'll tell you how they run out!

If there's room, put up an outbuilding at your current home.

If there isn't room, then it's a quality of life question. I had a house with a single car garage that I would have had nearly paid off by now if I stayed there. I moved 3 years ago, and owed about 45k on the place.

Where I am now, it will be 10 years before I pay this place off. But it's a much nicer place. No regrets.

I'm a master at rationalizing paying for stuff I don't want to do. So, let me help you out:

They will do it much faster than you could, and as you stated, your time is worth money.
If they break something, they'll fix it. If you break something, you're on the hook.
If there's a problem with the install you can call them back to fix it. If there's a problem and you do it, you can fix it.
Depending on who you use, and your skill level, it's probable that you'll get a better job if you pay to have it done.
You could always try "The official good deal and hook up thread of C4guru.com" for someone who will do it in trade, or help.

Hope that helps.

Someone said, "no one ever made money selling into a panic".

My money is in a 401k. I was going to be clever and move a bunch of it into guaranteed intrest funds. Then I found out my orders wouldn't be carried out until the end of TODAY. I'm strapped in and going for the ride. It's a lot like riding that Top Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point, as I did this summer. Shot up to the top, 125 mph, 400 feet in the air. At the top, you almost come to a stop making the bend to shoot almost straight down. So there I was, 400 feet in the air, if I could have opted to get out, I would have, but I was strapped in, and down I went. :shaking:

The good news is I have at least 10 years until I retire, probably longer. (If you want to call that good news. )

Ok, the good news is I have my health, and a C4, and new wheels to put on it. Life is good.

No, they couldn't. Panic is everywhere. They are trying to avoid a huge drop. Problem is, Bernanke is reationary, Greenspan was proactive. Reactionary policy leads to lots of bad stuff.

Dale, I started this thread to have some fun, I apologize to you, I never meant to intimidate anyone. If my limited abilities allow me I will jump right in and try to answer a question. The point I was making is this, right now there is someone "over there" who is asking what size heater hose on his car. I mean, really a tape measure is not that hard to use. That is the type of question we were making fun of.

I must be coming across like a whiner? Not my intent. I don't feel threatened or offended. I'm just making an observation. We all know the talent from that other place has migrated here. I still go to the other place. I see the stuff being posted there, pretty weak stuff, (being kind).

All I'm trying to say is, if I'm a lurker, and checking things out here, I may get intimidated and move along. The way for a site to grow is hits and users. Chasing off anything but troublemakers isn't a good plan, I don't think.

Once again... I'm cool with this, I do see the humor, I'm just trying to point out what an "observer" may see. And again, if I come across as a whiner, or the post police, sorry, not my intention.

What do you guys want to accomplish?
Without question there are lots of stupid questions, and lots of posters who don't learn, ever. On the other hand, there are lots of guys like me. I'm not a skilled wrench. There is lots and lots of stuff I don't know, not just about C4s, but in general. But there are some things I do know, I'm not apologizing, just stating my point of reference.
Stuff like this has the feeling of a High School clique. The "we know stuff, we're cool" clique.
I really think the idea is to make this a safe haven for anyone who enjoys Corvettes? If I'm wrong, feel free to correct me.

Besides, if you don't have askers, then all you have to discuss is the people who aren't as smart or as cool as you are.

Then there is the question of how many are still on the road. Subtract out the wrecked, abandoned, parted out, converted to track only, etc and it would seem the percentage of 'survivors' declines almost weekly.

I'd be surprised if more than 1/2 of the production run is still road worthy. Just the reasons stated explain why they're going away:

Lack of respect
Cheap prices
Underfunded individuals buying them
Parting out and track cars

If someone buys a Vette for $6k and is cash strapped, chances are, that Vette is on it's way to it's demise.

I don't care about NCRS or that sort of thing. My car is a higher mileage driver, (75k). But, it is about 10 times better than when I bought it, and in the next couple of years it will be a nice example of a driver. I wanted a cheap car I could put $ into slowly and make it how I like it. I got what I wanted.

I would agree about the lack of respect keeping cars out of shows. I drove to a local show and didn't feel my car was "worthy", so I parked in the lot. I learned my car is every bit as good as some in there. Next show I went to, I was happy to put it in.

What do you want? What do you think you need? You already know you can spend any amount of money that you care to. There are pans especially for Corvettes, there are one piece and two piece rear main seal pans, road race pans, drag race pans, and any number of other available oil pans. From the sound of it, you might just as well remove the stocker, clean it up and paint it.

RACE ON!!!

I've become friendly with the guy who owns the body shop I use. I asked him about painting it up. He didn't seem to enthusiastic about that. His opininon is that it's difficult to get all the rust off, and be sure the pan is sound. He said his wife's car had a rusty pan, and he's replacing it. I trust this guy, so I take this as sound advice.
A stocker is all I need. I'm not a racer. And chrome doesn't really float my boat on the oil pan. I guess you get what you pay for?

My oil pan on my 87 is all rust covered.
I check vette2vette, $95 used, $250 new.
Go to Corvette Central $250.
Try ebay, $250 for one, and $75 for another that's for a sbc, (not sure if would be right for my Vette).
Now I try Summitracing, and I find lots of pans for $30, $40, $50. Some are chrome, some not.

What gives?

I bet you are itching to put them on!

Can't wait to see pix!

If the lugs were here, the wheels would be on the car.
Just as well, I can take my time polishing them.
I already have my "before" pics in the parts section trying to sell my old wheels.

Called AFS with my cc # last Friday. The wheels got here today. Not bad. They are beautiful. Unboxed them and found the lugs weren't included as promised. These are the lugs they threw in for free. Since it was an add in, it's understandable it got overlooked. So, I called them up, and they were very friendly, even promised to ship the lugs priority mail to get them here in 2 business days! Since it will be cold and snowy here starting tomorrow, it won't be an issue. I guess it means a few more coats of wax on the wheels.

They really are as advertised, great wheels.

The only "economic stimulus" that works is tax cuts.
The Dems want to take tax money and give it to the poor. Sorry, that doesn't stimulate the economy.
The Dems want a recession, to spur people to vote Democrat. The media is populated with people who went to liberal arts colleges and studied journalism. They tend to be liberal/Democrat. Most in the media are happy to work with Democrats.

(This probably should be in off topic).

I don't have a lot to contribute, but here is my part. I don't know a lot about the C4, I am a noob. I am in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and what I do have is the ability to help if you need it. I may not know the C4, but what I am good at is taking what I know, and applying it to a given situation. I'm a systems guy by trade. My degree is in electronics but that's long since faded. I work in IT. I'm a database administrator. I have built pcs in the past, so I can still mess with them, but I'm not an expert, (I once was).
If you need a hand, or another pair of eyes, I can help.
If you have computer questitons, if I don't know the answer, I can find it. If you want to know about Oracle databases, or Lawson ERP packages, I'm your guy! (Not stuff needed by the average joe, I know).

What year is your Vette?
Is that an air scoop on the front where the license plate cover is?

1987, and it's under the hood. The air filter cover can be cut for improved air flow. Since I have to paint it anyway, wondering if I should change the color?

I don't want to open a new thread for this but I do have another question. I bought a 2nd air filter cover, and I'm cutting it. It needs to be painted, should I paint it black, as original, or red? Don't know if red would look to cheesy.

It's no secret, I bought AFS ZR1 chrome wheels. They're in transit, and scheduled to get here on Thursday! :thumbright:

Now, I need to protect these babies. I was just going to slather car wax all over them a couple of times. But got to thinking, is there anything out there that's especially good for chrome?

Thanks.

(Yes, I'm stoked).

No way. If I want an old Impala, I'd buy that.
I do kind of like the kit that converts a C5 to a C1, that's nice looking.

If I had a lot of money, and I could buy any car I want, it would be a tough decision. I'd either get a brand new Z06, with delivery at the NCM, or Matt383's C4.

An oil pan is an oil pan, right?
Wrong.
I went to art's covette parts and found one, $266.
I went to summit racing and found several, from $56 to $122.

Is there any real difference? Are the more expensive ones heavier steel? Does anyone have recommendations?

But I could totally see GM doing the same thing.

I could see GM being that stupid... if it weren't for the Corvette. If GM tried that on a Corvette club, they'd use up a whole bunch of goodwill. And that can be very expensive to try to reclaim.

Ford has decided the image of their cars is their property. No matter how you use the image, or who owns the car! They squashed a calendar being produced by the Black Mustang Club.

How stupid can you be?
