New hood emblem questions

I saw one on ebay, so I bought it, mine has no red left in it, it's all faded. Got the emblem, it's very nice. Then I looked at the job, what a pain. I looked for some articles and I see that I need some pal nuts and double sided tape.

Where can I get pal nuts? And what kind of tape would work best? I know the double sided tape goes behind the center section but is the outer ring secured with anything?

Seems pretty reasonable in $$. (About $200.00 less than I paid for my KS EVO-Zs from AFS).

Hope they meet your expectations.
:thumbleft:

I researched the Kumhos and they seem like they should be ok. They don't go well in snow... go figure.
Tirerack had the tire rated 17 out of 44 tires. It's only a "W" rated, but I don't think I'll be going over 168mph! They dinged it hardest for treadwear and ride comfort.

I think they will fit my needs, but there is only one way to find out... put them on and drive!

My 87 had dry rot on the Goodyears. Told the Mrs. that 17" tires and wheels make more sense than buying 16" tires, (besides, I'm not fond of the stock wheels.). She signed up for it.
Called AFS today, gave them my CC #, they said they'd ship today. 4 Kumho tires, 275/40/17, 4 17x9.5 chrome ZR1s with early C4 offset. Total price $970, shipped.

I'm stoked. Pics will follow as soon as possible.

Length != height.

If the average human is one foot long then the football field is 300 body lenghts. I don't think size 12 shoes are the norm though. If, however, the average shoe size is 10-10 1/2 then the math works out.

Ugh. That's silly. When discussing the length of an animal, it's common practice to use the long dimension. If I lie down, is my length still 1 foot? Is a rattle snake 4" long, (cross section)?
Either the statement is misleading, or flat out wrong, either isn't good.

But it's still an entertaining article.

I sure wanted that Silver/Gray '85 that was in Iowa. But I believe I got a better car at a better price with the Ruby. I still really do want an early C4 in the two tone silver though. If I ever come across a super deal on one, I will probably do something that will get me in a LOT of trouble with my wife.

I remember how you drooled every time a two tone came up. It was almost comical. From what I can see and what I've read, you did very well. There are merits for both early and later C4s. If I bought that black rose 92 I was looking at, I'd probably be wishing I had bought my 87 instead. But, if I had it to do over, I'd have gone with an LTx car.

Mine was the first two tone blue c4 vette I had seen, while 99% of the time it was the two tone bronze vettes that I seen were everywhere. It just seems that darker bottom makes the belt line stand out more pronounced then the solid colored Vettes and to think at one time I was planning on painting the entire car dark blue, but not now, going to keep both blues.

:tongue5:

Matt383 has a super car, I think it's an 88. It's a dark blue, kind of a midnight blue. I don't think it's a factory color, but that car is the prettiest C4 I've ever seen, no matter what the year. He's selling the thing, if I were rolling in cash, it would be mine!
As for two tones, CSS996 always expressed that he liked two tones, then he went and bought a ruby... go figure!

Ummmm, if the average person is 6 feet tall, the math doesn't work. 6 feet = 2 yards. 350 times 2 yards is 700 yards. A football field is 100 yards. Even if you use 5 feet for a human's body length it's 1.67 yards, and 350 x 1.67 = 584.5 yards.

Sorry, it's the nerd in me.

It's all good - just because I want my C4 as original as possible doesn't mean I think that's the right choice for everyone. I just figured I'd mention the differences in case it matters to somebody ...

Nothing wrong with that. I'm ok with however anyone wants to use their car. It is a challenge to make it all original, but I don't have that kind of attention to detail. Not only that, I don't mind personalizations that make it mine. But I'm not a racer. If you hear the racers talk, anyone who doesn't race is not a real Corvette enthusiast.
There's room for everyone under the tent.

BTW, any idea why Lloyd's mats are so much more? The mats you pointed out are 52.99, the Lloyd's mats are 89.99. Is it just the stitching?

The mats in my car are pretty beat, and have a velcro strip that meshes with a strip on the floor. That's not custom is it?

How to tell if it's time for shocks?

I've had my car for a year, but it's now 21 years old. I have no clue when or if the shocks have been changed. I was reading Andy's write up on how to change shocks and got to thinking, how do I tell if mine are bad? I know on other cars, you check the bounce, that is, the dampening effect of the shocks. But, for a Corvette is it different? I mean, there isn't a lot of room for the car to bounce in the first place. The car seems pretty tight, not much bounce or sway, but, I had to ask.

And, if I did decide I wanted new shocks, what would be a good shock for a standard, non Z51 87? I'm not a racer, so I'd like a shock that is a compromise between a racer and a decent ride.

I've worked in tech for a long time. We use the designation "guru" in a very mocking sort of way. In my business if we call someone a guru, we mean the person in question is a know-it-all with a very loose grip on any real, useful information.

If there were a logo that didn't say "guru", I'd put it on my car. I just have an aversion to the guru thing.

I've warmed to the look of the nose, and appreciate the function. Not a big fan of the vents on the side, they look like an add on, or an after thought to me. And the back? No way. The factory tail is pretty darn good. The mod looks too generic to me.

But as always, it's your car, do what you like!

For example, keeping someone from purchasing an airfoil kit that destroys your engine...

Unless you have a friend with a dyno, you'll spend lots more than that just to find out.

Maybe K&N is counting on you not wanting to spend that $.

Well, we both discussed that. The dyno testing would be more than the cost of the intake, and then, if you sent it back, you'd lose whatever gain the intake did provide. So, it's not a real ballsy move by K&N.

Small improvements

This year is kind of trashed for making my car faster. I have an 87 and I need to buy wheels and tires, and want a new radio. So, beyond that, if I keep it running I'm in pretty good shape.
However, there's the small improvement possiblity. In the past, having owned cars that weren't Corvettes, pretty much anything you touch, you can make it better. On a Corvette, a lot of the stuff is pretty good out of the box. One of the things I will do this year is a tune up, plugs, wires, cap and rotor. Is it possible to sneak up on making my car better by putting in better components for everything I touch?
I've read over and over where people recommend AC Delco plugs, and wires, etc. Now, if I buy better wires, better plugs, maybe even a new coil, can I slowly make the car more solid, and slightly faster? And even if it doesn't make it faster, position it so that when I do something a bit bigger, (intake, headers), the components I've replaced are good enough. Or is that just not reasonable, and I should stick with direct replacements?

Thanks.

My buddy bought a new 07 Mustang GT. For Christmas he bought himself a cold air intake. He keeps busting my chops saying that the cold air intake gives him a "dyno guaranteed" +15 HP. I told him 5-7 HP is realistic. It's a K&N, and K&N states that if you dyno before and after and don't get +15 HP, you can get your money back.

Just interested in some opinions of the folks here.

I think you get what you pay for - my car came with a set of expensive chrome wheels. The kind with a 5 year chrome warranty instead of 1 or 3. They looked better after 20k miles than the AFS did brand new.

This was 4 1/2 years ago now, so things may have changed with AFS since then.

I guess so. I think that what I want to be sure of is that I'm getting what I pay for. If I go with AFS or FR I know I'm getting lower end wheels. I can expect 4 or 5 years out of them.

What do I get with AR TTIIs? Not sure.

It's a 20 year old vette, so I don't want to put $2k into the wheels. If OE still makes direct fit, I'll try them. Seems like a nice compromise.

OE doesn't make correct offset for the early C4, so it's looking like FR or AFS. I think Tomz sells FR.

Sort of a dumb question, as I know all are welcome, but these are the types of things that make me wonder;

Will this site remain C4 specific?

.
.
.

Those are great questions. I know this wasn't addressed to me, but since it's a forum, I'll jump right in.
As much as I like the idea of C4 exclusivity, many, (most?), C4 owners have other Corvette interests. C4 and older might be a way to expand without generating the class warfare we see on other forums.
On the other hand, C5 is the next step for many C4 owners. In general the C5 is newer and faster, and it is a Corvette. Do you expand to keep users who move on to C5s, or view them as acceptable losses? Tough call.

I've seen it posted elsewhere, and I'd have to agree, the C4 owners are the red-headed step children of Corvette ownership. Many C4 owners don't spend a lot of money, and can barely afford their car. So, the C4 section on other forums doesn't exactly have vendors salivating. Yes there are C4 owners who have plenty of money, and choose to have a C4. Then there are the guys who could afford another generation, but find the C4 to be a nice place to be, (me).

If I owned the site, and I wanted to expand, I'd include C1-C3. Eventually, I'd go to C5, as the prices fall on C5s, there will be C4 owners who move to C5. But, if I owned the place, I'd expand. Love of the C4 is great, but there's nothing wrong with making money while doing what you like!

How the heck do you find OEM wheels? If you put that in a google search, well, it ain't pretty.

That's my big purchase this off season, that and a new sound system. Anyway, I have an 87, and I want direct fit, no spacers. I have found AFS and FR wheels on ebay. I really think I want chrome, I know polished lasts longer, but I don't drive in the salt, and I'm old school, (ok, I'm just old).

I've read where some guys have had trouble with FR quality. That concerns me. Is AFS better than FR? Is there an option I'm not seeing? Would I be better off to bite the bullet and pay the extra for some AR TTIIs? Is the quality that much better? Like everyone else, I want to make a smart buy, best quality at the best price. But I don't want to save $200 at the sacrifice of quality.

So, what do the gurus have to say?

Just some idle ramblings from a noob, so take it for what it's worth.

I like the navigation of this site, and it seems much faster than when I first joined about a year ago. Clearly it's getting busier with more users, that's a good thing.

What I wish for: Someone to teach me, or a way to keep track of posts, something like my recent posts.
More stuff in the for sale sections. I love looking at Corvettes for sale, and constantly troll around for parts. Maybe you can attract some vendors/group buys here. I know it's not easy to get those things going, just what I'd like to see.

Anyway, good work guys.
