I've seen a few threads on it so it's a searchable topic on sites like CF and DC. From what I read it's VERY involved.

Not even just the body work required, which is considerable, the frame will need to be strengthened to make up for losing the upper structure of the birdcage.

I've never done, never wanted to, and will probably turn down a friend if they ask me to help. I guess I don't even really see the point. The tops already come off and the rear windows can be removable like I did to mine very easily.

You'll lose all the storage area when the top is down, and all the safety if the car flips. Even structurally modified...the frame will still twist and flex reducing the handling capabilities.

My advice...though not requested, is to buy a convertible if you want a convertible.

Thanks for the (extensive) input.

Andy would be shocked (and perhaps appalled ), but the reason this question is getting asked is that we have long term plans to heavily modify a C3. Since modification means we don't have care about original equipment, the goal is to spend as little as possible on purchasing the car itself: and coupes are cheaper than convertibles. If the conversion will cost more than the difference in price and/or cause real problems, that's obviously not a real savings.

Good morning, all!

First day of new student orientation at the University - I'll spend half the day running around the campus checking on things ...

Marcus, are you going to be like those crazy Mulherns and keep the C5?

Nice run! I'm still edging up in speed from blowing out my knee, so I'd be lucky to do the same mileage in another five minutes.

The fastest I ever ran (1.5 in 8:12) I felt slow.

Good morning, all.

Today is the first day of our "Fall Crush" - the three week period of heaviest load as our students arrive/return. It's all hands on deck, but I enjoy it: kind of a reminder of why we're here.

Ivelis actually observed yesterday that Friday seemed busier than in past years. Swap meet spaces were full, though some of the vendors seemed new - we didn't find a couple of small guys we look for. The Manufacturer Midway seemed a little sparer (I miss the somewhat "blingy" but always interesting West Coast Corvette), but the installation alley (exhausts, mostly) seemed bigger. Fun field was just about full when we left - C5/C6 Registry (where we parked) was completely full: we made another registry member very happy when we said we were leaving for the day.

Every year, changes: YMMV.

Some thoughts from Friday at Carlisle:

Carlisle is mind-blowing for first-timers. More than a few times yesterday my wife and I heard variations on the "there's more?" theme. The (filled) show field is really quite large and there's so much variety.

Carlisle is ever-changing. You can see the striations in the hobby - the increasing split in those with the solid-axles and mid-years who just show them from those who just drive them, the slow emergence of the early C4 as a legitimate restoration target, the aging of the C5 (now often second or even third owner cars), the anticipation of the C7.

Carlisle remains essential. I got a lot out of 2012 Carlisle in a little over half a day: calibration on what used Corvettes are actually selling and for what, knowledge that nobody who matters is yet stepping up and making replica Centennial wheels in non stock sizes, a view on what color Night Race Blue actually is, a look at some gorgeous modified cars, and an original and correct oil cap for my 1985 where (shockingly) you can actually read the lettering.

Good morning, Marcus, all.

Nice temps in Philadelphia, too: 71 right now, going up to 76 with a chance of showers.

Busy week - ramping up for the return of the undergrads next week and getting ready for Corvettes at Carlisle.

I'll start:

2012 Centennial Edition coupe (ZLC) 3LT, MYC, NPP, C2L, R8C

Closing in on 10,000 miles - no problems.

It could be a number of things.

First, put the wire back on the way you had it before. Look at the distance between the end of the plug boot and the silver part of the spark plug. How much white insulator is showing? And (important) is that measurement the same as the other boots/plugs?

I ask because the boot may have never been full seated. I've had a few wires that took a lot of pressure to go on right the first time.

If you have dielectric grease on the boot you should be able to slide the boot on until you can feel the connector in the boot touch the top of the plug. Then push harder and there should be a distinct click when the connector goes over the tip of the plug.

If you can't feel that click either the boot's not seated far enough or the connector inside the boot is damaged. Again, check the amount of insulator showing.

If no click is felt look inside the boot to see if the brass connector is distorted. It should be round.
It's possible that the connector could have been damaged by pulling it off the plug at an angle.

The brass connector was put on the wire at the factory with a crimp machine (I speced in that connector at Mallory and my company leased the machines to them). Though they could be using another vendor now.

Generally, the boots have a good seal to the wire. But you may be able to slide the boot back enough to expose the connector.

Some of the hand crimp tools guys have in their garages have a spark plug wire hole. Some of the wire sets have 2 die halves, one goes in a vice the other over the wire and you hit it with a hammer.

If you can't slide the boot back, you're only choice is to try and tighten up the connector with a pair of pliers using the round part of the plier jaws. But first check for the click.

Damn, Bill!

BillH must be actually doing something ...

... I spent most of the morning (in between carting the parents back and forth from their church) prepping the 1985 for her first judging in over a year. Lauren is looking pretty good - just a couple more things to clean up. We convoy up to New Hope on Friday afternoon.
