Thanks for your help and input. I always jump to something more severe than what it usually is. It turned out to be the alternator and an intermittent miss on #5 due to a burned through plug wire cap. There is a new set of Bosch plug wires on there. Their proximity to the exhaust manifold is for some reason burning through them and causing the arch. I'm going to switch out that wire in the morning and all should be well again till the next disaster I over analize.

Everything you mentioned adds to the impact of global warming.

Clothes keep people warm thus more heat.

Exploding incindiary devices create heat.

Gasoline........ #1 offender of global warming

Excess fat = excess mass = more heat.

We're all gonna die..... Aaahhhhhh.........

I've gone to many races at Homestead of all venues. I've seen some horrendous wrecks and lives lost there too. The IRL cars are wicked fast. 210 plus on the oval. Nascar is more entertaining there though because of the number of cars/trucks on the track. 20 cars on a mile and a half just doesn't leave much wheel to wheel racing. Usually the fastest few cars are battling for the lead and the rest are just running laps. Nascar rides can hit the wall and continue to race. There is no continuing if you take an IRL racer into the wall. Man they just disintergrate leaving the cockpit intact. Most of the times the drivers are intact too. I went to all the events for over 10 years. Now I pretty much fire up the grill in the yard and watch it on the tube. I'm getting to be a real lazy mofo. Lots of former Cart/IRL drivers have taken a seat with the big dogs. I like the road course for IRL better than the roundy round. True , you can't see as much, but there are more shifts and lots of speed variations. Tampa /St Pete follows this one.

Cool. You could cover that opening above the TV with a retractable theater type curtain. That might give you less outdoor light intrusion while your watching.

How do your think a cylinder binding (seizing?) up and maybe still running tight, relates to a stumble at idle and alternator output? I don't get the connection. Does the engine seem to suffer any symptoms related to cylinder wall or piston ring damage? Is it using a lot more oil since the event?

RACE ON!!!

No oil issues. I think I just jumped to a wrong conclusion.
The exhaust manifold kept frying the # 6 wire until we resolved the issue with a metal jacket covered Oldsmobile plug cap. I know what a miss feels like and it didn't feel that way. It wasn't a consistant miss anyway. More like the engine would stumble and the volt gauge would jump. It has a new tensioner on it so it doesn't appear to be the belt binding up. Just another crazy day for me. No worries. The culprit will be found. I'll pass along the findings.

Do they have any a/c units, electrical appliances or large quantities of copper wire at that site?

Back in December I had the flow down problem from a defective injector on the #6 cylinder that caused the engine to lock. The mechanic got it to break free. We replaced 4 injectors, wires, plugs cap and rotor. I've only put about 500 miles on the engine since I got it back from the shop. Under load the engine works fine but at idle the engine slows like it's misfiring and you can see the voltmeter dip from 3/4 position to 1/2, 3/4 to 1/2 like it must be binding a little on the 6th cylinder wall. The fuel at the time of the injector failure washed all the lubricants off the cylinder wall and the ring. The engine is a 383 with about 8000 miles on the engine. Should I just run it and hope it loosens up, drive it till she dies or do the engine gurus have any words of wisdom for a brother in need.

I do the run what you brung routine since I'm a novice and really only want to get some seat time. Some guys chase the numbers while I go to enjoy my Corvette/Porsche and gain some experience on its handling characteristics. So I just bring a couple folding chairs, a cooler with some drinks and snacks, a lighter outlet plug in air pump, pressure guage, small tool box, glass cleaner and paper towels, helmet, sun screen, sunglasses and a hat. I run on my street tires but I do not get the optimum performance of a sticky tire. Make sure your car is well maintained and everything is tightened down and in it's proper place. Remove any loose stuff from inside the car. I don't know why I bring the chairs. I hardly get to use them. If I'm not on the track driving, I'm on the track working. This is my third season and it's hard to break lifelong habits, but I'm trying.

Got up and went for a nice 2 hour round trip ride with the 90 Coupe to Ft Lauderdale Airport and dropped off the spouse. She's up in Easley, South Carolina to spend a week with some relatives. It was in the 60's for the whole ride and it made for some comfortable driving. We left around 8:30 AM so the traffic flow was pretty good. No bumper to bumper stuff. Slowed down a little just before the traditional Florida Highway Patrol speed enforcement zone and sure as sugar they were lined up and pulling them over. As soon as you clear the crest of this hill there are about 8 enforcers lined and ready to protect and serve. I just dropped off the 91 for a power surging issue and a crazy brake problem. Since I don't have to give any cash to the state, the least I can do share it with the mechanic.

I had the tune up done and repleced the egr valve thinking this would smooth out the slightly rocky idle. After doing that the idle remained the same. It wouldn't be bad if the engine/exhaust had the appropriate chugga-chugga sound to accompany the rough idle.
