bogus 93 Jeep Cherokee Cold Start issue

Odd... I have replaced the IAC...

Our Cherokee (I6/A4) has decided to become rather cold natured. It just won't hold an idle when cold.

It has 163k miles on it and otherwise runs fine. As stated, I replaced the IAC and that didn't fix it. According to the NAPA instructions, that IAC simply installed and the engine controller will reset it. And it acted exactly like it said it would - run at high idle and then drop down as it found itself.

Any other adjustments I need to be aware of?

I am thinking a dirty throttle body or bad TPS.

Thanks!

Let it suck up some Seafoam both through the throttle body and all the various vacuum ports.

I love the stuff. It's not a fix all product but it goes a long way as a preventative maintenance.

Typically I will buy two bottles. One gets sucked up through vacuum ports and intake, and the other goes in the tank. The engine burns it and it may help clean out any crap that's complicating the engine operation. Cleans injectors fuel pumps and regulators.

It's good for a lot of things if you read the back. Heck you can even use it in the crank case if you're about to do an oil change. Pour it in with the oil and run the engine. It'll course through the system and work on things like sludge and buildup. A change must follow, but it's good if you think a lifter might be stuck and simply needs an internal cleaning. Seafoam is easier to administer than pulling the intake to get the stuck lifter out. It won't always work that easy...but it's a cheap and fast way to see IF it'll fix what's ailing the engine.

And as mentioned, it's good for the fuel system, and air intake system...though I would not put it in before a MAF or something like that. Induce it directly to a throttle body after the MAF.

That's supprising David.

The car in my avatar had a 55% reading on the leakdown gauge, I ran half a can thru the air intake with a squeeze bottle and got it back to 96%. Obviously, carbon on the exhaust valve.

I've used seafoam once before on the vette and was happy with the results. There are naysayers like anything else in the world, but use it properly and I believe it delivers what it intends.

ok... now that everyone knows about seafoam, lets get back to the real problem... my poor Jeep.

apparently, there are three potential causes:

1. Bad IAC - replaced, no changed.
2. Bad TPS - It can send bad info to the computer, causing the IAC to close.
3. Weak battery (bad connections) - the battery voltage drops below 10.7 volts, it pisses off the engine controller!!

Have you checked the battery and tested voltage drop? Or is this something you read about?

I did some web searching... the Jeep is now out of town for a few days - bastet has a conf in AZ and drove.

It only effects startup. Otherwise, fine.

I will do those tests when she gets back.
