What do you guys like for virus protection.

I am using AVG on my personal stuff, need to buy a new one.

What is light on the system resources, easy to use, effective (most important), etc......

I'm a little lost on this stuff these days..

I use McAfee on some of my computers, and some free stuff I get from Charter on others. I just got an e-mail today from WinXPNews with a Black Friday deal on some AV stuff that supposedly fits your description:

==============================================

BLACK FRIDAY ONLY - Sunbelt Software is practically giving away this special, so save almost 70% on VIPRE Antivirus + Antispyware. Get a single license of VIPRE for only $9.95 instead of 29.95! Get your Black Friday Special here:
http://www.wxpnews.com/CO5URM/081128-BlackFriday

Add Our Firewall for just $9.95

And, as a VIPRE Customer, you can add the award-winning Sunbelt Personal Firewall (SPF) to your cart for just $9.95! With VIPRE and SPF together, your PC Security is fully covered for just 20 bucks, with only -one- company to call for toll-free, U.S.-based Tech Support! Just put VIPRE in the cart, click on checkout and you will see the special 50% discount offer appear.

The Press Loves VIPRE

A good example is ZDNet security specialist Adrian Kingsley-Hughes who said a few days ago: "I've no hesitation or reservation in recommending VIPRE. I like it because it's lightweight, no-nonsense and does what it says. If there's a better antivirus / antispyware scanner out there, I've not found it (and I've been actively looking)." Full story here:
http://www.wxpnews.com/CO5URM/081128-CNet-Review

Already have VIPRE? Everybody Wins!

Just because you already have VIPRE doesn't mean you can't take advantage of these awesome savings. You can purchase a license of VIPRE for your friends or family for only $9.95. VIPRE makes a great stocking stuffer. And today you can buy a VIPRE Key that will extend your subscription when it expires. How does this work? VERY EASY. You buy the Black Friday special now. You get the confirmation email with a new key. Save that email and enter your new key when your VIPRE expires. (Yes, the key only gets activated when you put it in VIPRE so you get the full 12 months out of it.) Extend your VIPRE License; add another year for only $9.95 instead of $29.95.
http://www.wxpnews.com/CO5URM/081128-BlackFriday

Need More Than One License?

If you need more than one user license, you can also take advantage of a flat $20 discount on any other VIPRE licensing option. For instance, get an unlimited home site license of VIPRE which will cover every PC in your home for only $29.95, instead of the normal $49.95. Another example: Get a 3 Computer license of VIPRE for only $19.95, also 20 bucks off. Here is another option. Get a 2 Computer license of VIPRE for only $14.95 instead of $34.95. You get the idea.

Availability and Licensing

The VIPRE Black Friday Special is available for $9.95 and includes all of the features, U.S.-based toll-free support, and updates of a standard subscription. Special pricing is available from midnight through 11:59pm on Friday, November 28, 2008.

Get your Black Friday Special Right Now. This offer expires at midnight.

Go Linux.

You are invisible on the web. And it's free, and it's faster.

I'd love to go linux, but I'm not tech enough for it. I worked for a software company for a bit, our Linux products were running TRIPLE the speed of windows based stuff.

Are all the drivers available for linux, and how about word documents and excel spreadsheets.

Open Office lets you see all the windows stuff.

It even runs on Windows if you want.

Sure does.

You don't have to be a code jockey anymore anyway. Ubuntu does almost everything itself, like Windows, WITHOUT the risks (if you do the trash sites (or, ESPECIALLY if you do the trash sites)), and without license issues, and ALWAYS faster. My old Dell Dim600 PIII w/PCLinuxOS is faster than Vista on my AMD 64 w/ 2G ramstick. What's THAT tell ya'?

Almost every function has graphical user interface, if you don't like command line.

Support forum is good too, if you're not afraid to read alot (it's BUSY yup).

Ask bmwgsa there; I think he does Linux.

Why go away from AVG? That's one of the best on earth.

It is low on resources and very effective. They do have a buy option.

Norton and McAfee sucks. They are resource hogs.

The only drivers people had most problems with was for wireless cards. Broadcoms, the worst, aren't even a challenge anymore. Kinda' boring, cause it doesn't make ya' THINK about solving a problem.

Some people don't like thinkin' tho', and like stuff gettin' done for 'em uh huh. Too much like work yup.

OK guys, its time to start thinking outside the box.

AVG used to be the top dog in the free product market.
A new product taking top honors is Avast! (www.avast.com)

It has greater coverage, a boot scan to get the bad guys before they can hide in the Windows core and a scanner that runs as the screen saver when your not using the computer.

It free and runs better than AVG. Version 8 of AVG is loaded with a anti-phishing/web protection package that adds extra traffic to your internet connection.

I have moved almost all of my home clients off of AVG and they are just tickled that the startup scanner is no longer holding them hostage every morning.

Try it. And if your not happy you can always reload AVG. If your happy, please send money......

AVAST Home Use product for Free

VIPRE AnitVirus/Firewall $20

AVG $55

I don't care about free or if I have to pay, I just want something that works the best and is not pig on my system.

I'll check out Avast, and for free, why not?

Isn't a 'pig'. Doesn't need extra 'help' (more resources).

Windows:

Walking around in public with signs saying, "sell me this".
Showing cell receptor sites for viruses, worms, etc. to latch onto.

Micro, and macro attacks; you're carryin' tons of stuff every where you go. Makes you tired, gets attention, gets dirty, allows bad guys to get in later, ad infinitum.

There's not a comparison.

Even the manufacturers are loadin' it now.

Not my 2 cents; but fact.

MY new computer came with Mcafee which just went past its 30 days this morning. Very coincidental to this thread.
I just downloaded and installed the Free Avast home edition. I'll use it for a while and see what I think. Their web page is convincing and the price it right.

I had AOL's version of Mcafee on mine for a while.
I might as well of hung a "welcome sailor" sign on my computer! Never again!

I used to be a Norton fan, the 2009 version just made my computer totally unuseable, so I uninstalled it.

I'm runnig SpySweeper with anti-virus now, seems to be doing the job.

The system scanner runs as the screen saver when your not using the computer. Unlike other free AV programs that start up the scanner when you start your computer

As to the AV, I'd go with AVG (Free AVG)

As to Linux, think long and hard on this one.

Linux does a lot, and you can't beat the price - but there are a lot of assorted issues:

Drivers: some just don't exist. You might have a multi-mode printer (scan/fax/print), and no driver (or software to use it). Linux does have some programs for that, but no driver is a problem, and the software might not interface correctly to the printer if the driver does exist.

Applications: There are some you'll never see in a Linux world. For example, Photoshop (or Creative Suite). Now, Linux does have "The GIMP" and a few other programs for graphics work, but you're off on a whole different track (and I personally don't like "The GIMP").

Games: If you're a gamer (I'm referring to running from the PC and not online games) then Linux is probably NOT for you

Music creation: If you use software sequencers and synths then Linux is NOT for you. Keep in mind that there are some synth programs for Linux, but they're not at the level of Reason, Abelton, Cakewalk and the like... And you might have MIDI driver issues (and a USB instrument could be a lot of fun to get working)

Application Programming: Depends on the language you're wanting to work in - so Linux might not be for you. It's a great environment for the open source languages or the interpreted languages (Java, PHP, CGI) - but if you want to play with VB, VC, VC++ and such - well; good luck...

Application Support: Linux is mostly user supported. That's both the beauty and curse of the system. If something doesn't work the way you want, you can always download the code and fix it yourself, or try and find whoever wrote it and get them to fix it - or worse, you "love" a certain program and whoever wrote it just got tired of it and moved on. Now, free is free and you can only expect so much for free - but it's something to always keep in mind, what you like may now ever get upgraded or may never be re-compiled to a newer version of the OS....

Now, In defense of Linux.....

You get a free Web Server
You get a free E-Mail server
You get the ability to cluster multiple PC's together (clustering)
You get the ability of multi-user without all the licenseing crap the Microsoft or Citrix put's you thru (I like VNC Viewer!!)
Nearly all applications for Linux are free

So, I would advise getting a second "el-cheapo" PC together and load Linux, see if it's your thing and you can live with it - if you can, go for it, if not you're out a few hours of your time.

That said, I'll be upgrading my laptop soon.
I figured I turn my current one, an HP Pavillion ze4400, into a Linux machine

Then I read this:
http://hp-linux.cern.ch/support/centp.php3
Quote:
HP Pavilions: The current HP Pavilions contain several components that are only supported under Windows 9x/NT/2000. Notably the builtin modem and sound cards. These cards need a special proprietary Windows library to function and are therefore not (yet) supported under Linux. Any possible information on the support status for these items can be found at the winmodem page. For most Pavilions you will need the latest version of XFree86 (>= 3.3.6) to get the graphics going

Thoughts?

Laptop's are always the most fun to change because so much of their hardware is proprietary.

You might want to think about getting a copy of VMWare and use that to create a Linux partition.

The nice thing about that is that the VMWare partition uses all the drivers that windows has (the whole thing becomes a co-operative OS, both Windows and Linux run together at the same time), so if it works in Windows it works in Linux.

Check this out, I posted up on the "other forum"
Thud:
That page is about 10 years old. It mentions Redhat 6.1 as being the most recent version, and redhat 6.1 came out in 1999. It also makes no mention of windows XP.

I'd say things have changed just a wee bit in the past decade.

I had very good luck installing Ubuntu 8.10 on an old Dell notebook, just today in fact. Much better than Kubuntu that I installed a few months ago.

Everything worked out of the box... wireless, sound, etc.

Download the .iso CD image, burn it to a disk, and you can boot up in the full OS to try it out, before you actually install anything to the HD. It'll run right from the CD.

www.ubuntu.com
So, basically you can check it out w/o installing it!

The better your AV, the slower it will make your computer.

Think of a gas chromatograph doin' chemical analysis of ALL atoms/molecules/etc that you take in your schnozz. You can't whiff the air till it goes thru the machine.

Overclock your CPU? Doesn't matter; the more in-depth the analysis, the longer it takes to process.

Go Linux.

So I download and this software and put it on.

I just got done loading the OS and the drivers, with the XP updates that's the only thing on the drive.

Now my wireless card isn't working.

It shows OK, the driver is good, shows no network.

This is an old laptop my sister gave me. I'm giving it to my 8 year old. Needs a keyboard, which is $25..one key is missing, not even an important one.

Downloaded what software?

Avast, referencing my previous post. Sorry.

It might have turned out a firewall.
You need to check your settings.

I cheated. I took out the device in device manager, just uninstalled it, then I re installed it and here I am, I'm on wireless now.

WOW!

I'm up and running on the demo Linux disk

All is not only well, but this thing is flying!

A duel-boot mode is available on the CD-rom

You doin' LiveCD, or have you installed? What version? 8.04? 8.10?

Usually it's a little faster once installed, because it doesn't have to spin-up and re-read the optical drive again.

Linux will read the MBR for windows, and install a bootloader for itself and windows.

LiveCD, 8.10
And yes it took a bit to boot up from the CD
But after that I'm OK.

Looks like I'd actually have to do an install for YouTube, no flash player up.
And Movie player is not up.

XP is much easier to repair than its predecessors. During the install of Avast an option to run a boot time scan is offered. I usually opt in, but first run an update of the database. The full scan takes roughly half an hour.

You can also select this by right clicking the Avast icon in the systray. Select "On Access Protection Control" The Menu button is the icon in the upper left corner of the control panel. Clicking here opens the menu and scroll down to Schedule boot-time scan.

Feel free to PM me any time if you need help

Only thing I've not liked is absence of a 'System Restore' function. Supposedly Intrepid 8.10 has one? Even then, only because updates occasionally re-configures driver modules to default, and you gotta' fish. Like re-programmin' the VCR/DV player.

And yes, support ends for earlier versions of apps and kernel versions. My favorite was Edgy, and I didn't back up wireless module when I had a problem, and canonical terminated Edgy support at the wrong time.

Up and running in duel-boot mode

Really runs great

There's a lot more features once it's installed itself.

Lots more are loaded, but not installed, like some that you need to view files in the Windows partition, while Linux is booted...

System / Administration / Synaptic Package Manager

If you got your wireless up tho', you're way ahead of the game. That's where most people quit and put the cuffs back on uh yup.

Ouch.
Those people need to be hunted down and exported to countries where the penalties are SEVERE!

Is there a viable solution for Shockwave yet?

Some sites need it in order to run.

I got Firefox to run in Wine.
YouTube seems to run faster when I do that.

Can't you get viruses in Wine?
Or can you since it's just a Windoze emulation.

http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-to ... n-Ubuntu-8-10-98076.shtml

It cannot be installed while FF is running; you'll have to either:

boot Windows,
download and save the file on Windows desktop,
re-boot to Ubuntu,
mount the Windows partition

(Places/Computer/XX.X GB Media/rt click/mount volume/double click/USERS/YOU/desktop

and move the file to Ubuntu desktop, and go to Step 2 of link above.

OR,

Install Epiphany browser.
It's already in your Syanptic package manager. System / Administration / Synaptic
Scroll to Epiphany, check epiphany - browser, mark apply.

Then download and install Flash

Shockwave will work with Epiphany browser.

How did you get it installed in FF?

I doubt any malware is written for Wine. Any malware written for Windows would have to find the same code flaw in Wine, and that ain't likely. There's too many Windows targets.

You need to run the install plugins through Wine for each user, w/o FF running.

This will install it "virtually"

You can then bring up FF in Wine and Shockwave will run.

EDIT
Plugins not programs.
BTW you need to "hunt" for the executables and run them in their native directories.

Linux will download movie files from your satellite box DVR without leaving a digital signature like Windows does. Very convenient when your 100 hours recording allotment is full.

I think also that Linux will mount your ECM/PCM when it is plugged in to your laptop. The only problem then is knowing the names and formats of the files loaded in your ECM/PCM device after mounting.
