I am back to chasing a miss on my 89. Going after the ground wires now. Everything is new except wiring.
But should the dist knock the socks off of ya when adjusting the timing? Don't remember the old one doing that. I realize they are high energy!

uh, no.

If the cap is frying you, check that cap for a crack, or, a bad boot or connector for the wires.

I am a HUGE fan of Taylors.

Have new MSD wires and dist is new. Have had mechanics say yes and no. Hate to replace things to see if it solves anything! That gets expensive!!!

It doesn't mean something isn't amiss.

You can figure out which is causing it. IT might be a small tear or a crack in the cap. The cap could have been made with a problem.

The knock sensor can do strange things. Make sure you got the right sensor to start with.
I had a friend here with a pulsating idle. He changed the sensor twice and it still was the sensor. It would only show up when reaching a certain temperature.
With the diagnostic software you could see the sensor coming in always late, when the knock should be over under normal circumstances.

Cap shouldn't fry you when adjusting it. Do what Andy suggested, check for cracks, arcs, loose or broken wires.

Try running the engine with the garage lights off and see if the are any obvious arcs coming off the cap
