Hi all - I've been chasing a hard cold start, running rich condition, as well as occasional intake backfiring. I tried the paperclip in the A & B terminals of the ALDL this past weekend and all I get is that the engine cooling fan comes on. I get no "check engine" light at all (with or without the paperclip in). Any help is appreciated, thanks,

Are you sure the bulb isn't burnt out?

the fan thing is what has me going.

I don't remember the specifics, but I don't think you are jumping a-b correctly.

double check that before going any farther.

I don't remember which are a-b anymore... damn... too much info to keep in ones brain!

If you are right on the a-b, and the fan still comes on, and no lights, check that the light isn't burned out, as Matt suggests.

The fan normally comes on at turn on... so that's not abstract.

If you don't get a code 12 back, then you have a problem...

The fan doesn't normally run at turn on. It should run continuous when A and B are jumped and the ignition is on but the car not running. Does the SES light ever go on? If not check the bulb. Here is the pin out:

So it is normal for the rad fan to run full time when A&B are jumpered and the key is turned on but not running? I will take the dash apart this weekend to check the bulb because in the 3 years I have owned the car I have never seen the check engine (SES) light on (not even with just the key turned on and not running)

it's to make sure the car doesn't overheat during diagnostics.
