My laptop got hit by "XP Defender", It took over just about everything, start up, shutdown, explorer, McCafee. Won't let me access the web, shuts down Windows Update.
Pops up screens every 10 seconds telling me my computer's been invaded, well yea, it has. It has the Microsoft logos, but it's certainly not MS. Of course, I can't find it anywhere on the drive, programs to delete it. So, I'll let the pros fix this one. Sucks |

Not that hard to remove.
From another PC download Malwarebytes Boot your computer into safe mode by tapping the F8 key as it is starting. Select safe mode from the menu and wait. Once the computer is settled into safe mode load the copy of Malwarebytes and run the full scan. Remove anything the MWB program finds. Once complete, repeat. Then boot into normal mode and run MWB again. Take two aspirin and call me if your still infected. www.sierranetworkservices.com This can save you a coupla hundred dollars depending where you live. |

Thanks guys,
Safe mode didn't work at all, tried 3 times each waiting a tad longer to hit F8, Defender still came on and no Windows Safe Mode screen. I used restore (thanks Kev) to go back to Jan. and got in w/o Defender. Downloaded Malwarebytes (I assume that's from malwarebytes.org) and ran a quick scan, found 2 Defender infections, removed them. But, I still can't boot in Safe Mode. I'll do a full scan now and see if anything else is in there. |

Hmm. The window of time to hit F8 can be pretty short. Just tap it over and over during the boot process. Have you ever gotten it into safe mode before?
I don't know if there is such a thing as a boot disk/cd for Windows XP. I had one of those when I was doing computer tech work on 95/98 and it was a lifesaver. |

Once tried hitting F8 about 3 times.
I have some discs somewhere, not sure id they're boot discs, thanks. |

Dood. when you "first" start the PC with the on switch, start tapping the F8 at about once or twice a second. Yeah it'll start beeping at you. Not to worry.
You have to start the alternate menu BEFORE the windows logo appears. If you see the logo, your not hitting F8 soon enough. |

F8 was tapped before the windows logo, 3 taps didn't work but 15 taps did. Thanks.

XP Defender is a real PITA. That's what was on the computer that I worked on earlier this week. After a while it was just easier to do a fresh reload.

Bill, did you run the update on the Malwarebytes? Run the update and see if there is a newer version of the database, if so download and run it again. Another little program I like is Ccleaner. Download and install it, it will find all the crap on the computer and clean it off.
