I am in the process of putting in a new cooling fan switch in my 84. I just purchased the switch today. I was getting things ready to install tomorrow..I just looked at the harness/pigtail and the end that goes into the switch is very broken up and brittle. The other end of the wire looks like it goes to a ground on the engine, am I right in saying this or is it more involved? I am using the stock setup as it works pretty good until I found the switch broken. I am not putting in a manual switch to control the fans myself, so it will be kept stock. I am going to order the factory harness/pigtail today. Any help would be appreciated...

You're right. When the switch closes, it grounds the relay and that turns the fan on.
Plastic get brittle with heat.

The thing on the engine IS the switch. The plastic box it connects to the is the fan relay.

So which part of that wire do you need? If it's the relay connector you can get those at Napa and remove the pins and wires and reinstall them in the new plastic, rather than recrimping or soldering any wires.

Now the computer runs the fan using it's own temperature switch, but that goes to the computer, not the relay.

Got the new switch and harness/pigtail installed today. No leaks and the fan came on at 230. Thanks to BillH and CentralCoaster for their help.
