Good Evening Gurus. I'm in the process of waxing the vette. I noticed on the front passager fender a softball size hazy spot. Dull but not "comes out and grabs you dull"its just there like a zit. I tryed 2,000 grit wet sand the area, no effect.
I would assume maybe the clearcoat has broken down in some way and the base coat is oxidizing. Have any of you had this experience and if so how did you correct it short of repainting. Thanks Erin |

When you wetsanded, did it change size (grow smaller/larger) at all?
If it's underneath the clear, you can't do much. I try something like Meguiar's medium cut cleaner. You can always go back to the sand paper. And, what are you using on the car after the 2000? Orbital or rotary polisher? |

Good evening Bill. Its not growing any bigger and I follow with what I think is 3000 grit, then use a porter cable DA polisher with 3M light compound followed buy polish, sealer than carnauba wax.
I have seen a few chemical spills on paint and I'm wondering if some sort of "hot" chemical i.e lacquer thinner, or caustic cleaner. Its probably just me! I need to get really close to see it! its lighter and dull. Dads at a school board meeting tonight or I would ask him, Geez I hope he behaves! |

It's hard to diagnose unless you see it in person and pics on the web usually don't show much.
You did the correct repair procedure. Heck, it could even be from the factory. It will be interesting to hear what Ron has to say about it. |

I'm thinking it might be a factory flaw that has become noticable over its short life. Its never been garaged so uv damage could be a factor. I doubt if dad will post tonight the school board meeting is suppose to be long and drawn out.

Bill you really have to get close to see the hazy. It looks like a factory paint problem and over time has begun to surface. Nothing great! I keep telling Erin its a high mileage vette what does she expect.

Yea, If I had it, I'd be jumping up and down like a 7 year old kid at his birthday party. Erin, you're standing too close to the car. BTW, there was a '07 yellow Z06 at the race track Saturday. I didn't instruct in the car but I bet Erin could have beat this guy's lap times. And he probably used 2 rolls of "Protect-O-Paint" (blue masking tape). Blue masking on a yellow Z06 just doesn't look right. |

It sounds like dead paint... even overly oxidized clear coat can go bad like this... but thin clear, that has been overly waxed can go bad.
Another cause can be the where... it could easily be an aerodynamic related. IF this is near the heat vent, it is possible that enough heat has passed out and has damaged the paint there. I would take it to a body shop and have them check it out. If your description is right, a simple shot of clear might just fix it... but if not, let them shoot the fender panel alone. The panel, IIRC, is easy to remove... |
