JAKEJR | 2618-T61 Vs 4032 High Silicone Piston Differences | ||

I've been internet shopping for a set of pistons for the 396 LT1 engine build for my son's car. I've come across pistons made of two different alloy specs - 2618-T61 Forged Aluminum and Forged 4032 High Silicone Aluminum alloy.
I came up blank when I tried finding a site that compared one material with another. Does anyone know the advantages/disadvantages of one Vs the other? Thanks for the help. Jake |

Here is a link of the two products. You could also give them a call if you want more info.

Thanks for the response. I had already read that one and found another one on Diamond Piston's site. Just looking for still more info though.
So far, seems the 2618s are the stronger of the two. Jake |

I just bought a rotating assembly from them. They were nice to talk with, and didn't seemed rushed to get off of the phone. I would compare the prices of both items. It looks like they both can take some abuse, so it depends on how you plan on using the engine (and $$). I went with the SRS, since I am putting a power adder on.

Yes, the 2618 alloy are the stronger of the two. They get installed with more clearance because they expand more. But, they are stronger. Most people would recommend them for high power, high rpm or FI applications.
The 4032's are what I used and are a compromise to provide extra strength, miminize the raw-raw-raw sound at cold start-up, but still avoid hyper-crap catastrophy. Keith Black's site has a good write-up IIRC. |

Thanks all. I went with the 2618-T61s and dropped them off at Reher & Morrison today.

Yep, 1/16 (X2), 3/16 pack Probe 14772 +.040" For the 398 CID build I'm into, I'm consider using piston rings I haven't used before and am hoping you or someone else has used them and will give me some feed-back on them. They're: Speed-Pro R-19100s and Perfect Circle 315-0036 Thanks, Jake |
