On the way home from school today my "Change Oil" light came on. The oil was just changed not even 800 miles ago so I know it's not old. Is this light a "timed" light or does something else set it off? How do I turn it off?

The oil life monitor must be reset every time you change the oil. Otherwise, as you have found out it could come on way before the next oil change is due.
1. Turn the key to the "ON" position, but don't start the engine. 2. Press the ENG/MET button on the Trip Monitor and release it. Then, within five seconds, press and release the ENG/MET button again. 3. Within five seconds, of Step 2 1990 – 1991 , press and hold the RANGE button on the Trip Monitor. 1992 -1996 , Press and hold the GAUGES button on the Trip Monitor. 4. The CHANGE OIL light will flash. 5. Hold the RANGE or GAUGES button until the CHANGE OIL light stops flashing and goes out. When the light goes out, the Engine Oil Life Monitor is reset. This should take about ten seconds. If it doesn't reset, turn the ignition "OFF" and repeat the procedure. |

It sounds as though the light wasn't properly recycled when the oil was changed. I would expect there is a procedure for turning the light off in your owner's manual. If not, I'm sure it is in your HERE. I would post it if I knew it, but with my '84, I have to do it the old fashioned way.
